I think this is a terrible article
How to deal with a one-upper
I mean, shouldn't we be above all this? Why make living a contest? I think the sentiment should be that you should be happy for what you have, especially the non-material things in life like your family and friends.

honestly i wouldn't go to such trouble to "one up" someone in creative ways--i just wouldn't bother having friends like that. life's too short to always be competing with someone who is SUPPOSED to be a friend. its childish.

I don't think it was meant to be all that serious...
Besides, I'm totally guilty of #1 -- "Oh, you just bought a brand new pimped out BMW SUV with leather seats, nav system, and chilled beverage holders? Well, I'm sure it's lovely, but I sold my car and now take public transportation everywhere -- you know, just doing my part for the environment."
