I want my life back!
It sucks that this is my 3rd year teaching, and I'm essentially starting all over again.
I have to wake up at 5:15, get to school no later than 6:40, I usually wind up staying until at LEAST 4:30 to get stuff done. At which point I come home, fall asleep in my chair for an hour, get up, eat dinner, go right back to doing work for school the next day...then it's back to bed to do it all over again.
I really want my life back. I miss actually getting to spend time with my husband!
Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: I want my life back!
I feel your pain
Yesterday I was in by 720, didn't leave till 600
Today in at 745 - meeting at 8, meeting during planning at 11, then had to leave at 4 for class 'till 730.
And I'm currently grading while I procrastinate on here.
I hate my life.

Re: I want my life back!
I feel your pain - even though I'm in year 7 of teaching, the planning has gotten easier but all of the extra responsibilities add up. I love my job, but it is a lot to handle!
And, summers are not free for me - I do summer school, tutoring, and curriculum projects like many other teachers I know

Re: I want my life back!
One of the things I used to hate the most about teaching was that the workday was never home - even though I'd come home earlier I'd still have to grade, write lesson plans, etc. Even though now I get up at 5:30 leave at 6, and don't get home until after 6pm, I am free when I do get home.
Sorry to invade your board.... but I am a former teacher and still work in the education field.

Re: I want my life back!
I totally hear you. I hate having this job & I can't see myself doing this much longer. It's just too life-consuming and drains all the joy out of me... and then I have to go home and do MORE work so I'm never free of it. The actual teaching is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to work, and dealing with these kids all day is enough of a job. It never ends. I'm seriously thinking of a career change.

No long weekend for us...this is the south, where we don't apparently celebrate ALL holidays

Yup--I could SO go for a four day weekend, but alas...we don't celebrate Columbus day here.
Next day off is November 12th.

Re: I want my life back!
I was doing ok for the first few weeks, now I am so behind on so many things. I've been a teacher for 10 years, but I find that with all the curriculum changes and grade changes (I have moved from 6th to 8th grade with my kids) that I am always starting from scratch.
I'm also a new-ish mom (DD is almost 7 months) so trying to find the time when I get home is soooo hard. (She's not yet meeting standards for acceptable bedtimes! )

Re: I want my life back!
I am so incredibly overwhelmed right now. I spent an hour after school calling and e-mailing parents about various things. I swear I've had more parent contact in the first 4 weeks of this year than I did all of last year.
Now I have a meeting tomorrow morning, plus all the other crap I have to get ready.
And, on top of it all, I feel like crap, but don't want to call in since it's more work to stay home than it is to call in sick.
I seriously want to cry.

I'm not complaining, I love my job and the perks that come with it. I just get bothered by the insinuation that teachers have it so easy because of summers off. Many of us - I'm sure your DH is included in this group - work above and beyond the expected hours of the teacher, carrying with us the responsibility of properly educating and caring for children. And not all of the extra work and care put into it is rewarded financially.
Yes, we have it good. So do MANY other professions!
KUDOS to all of my teacher colleagues - keep your spirits up for the great job you're doing.

If this was directed at me (sorry, so many responses!), it's because I just moved to NC. New state standards, new testing requirements. Not to mention, I taught Kindergarten last year, and now I'm teaching 5th grade.
So even though I have 2 years of experience, I feel just like I did when I was brand new to teaching.

Well said and I agree. It's ironic that even on a board *for* teachers, we still have to continually point these things out and remind people of what we our job really entails.

I believe Beth was asking for support with this thread, not for people to point out the ways in which they believe teachers' lives are way easier than everyone elses. It's really irritating for educators to hear people repeat misconceptions like that all the time. Let's try to build each other up instead of playing devil's advocate

I was just trying to show her the (brief) light at the end of the tunnel - no harm intended. I NEVER said teachers lives were easier than any others.

OMG Beth - I feel like I could have written this word for word. I have been a guidance counselor for 5 years, and now that I am in a new state, in a hell school - I feel exactly the same way
