I want to take my dd out of her integrated classroom ?

We had my dd tested in the fall and she qualified for pt, ot and speech. She had an above average iq and there no cognitive issues were found. At that time we had her enrolled in a private prek. At her committee meeting they sort of convinced us to put her into a 5 day a week program in an intergrated classroom In a special needs school. They felt because she was getting all of these services it would be too much for her to go to regular prek and than go and have all 3 services. She has been in the new school for over a month and I hate it! Truthfully I don't think she is learning anything academically, there is little to no communication with the teacher, and she doesn't like it. The other thing that I find crazy is that 1/2 of the class has to nap during the time she is there. So she spends like an hour and a 1/2 in a classroom with no lights and can't talk loud. I just think that is crazy. My dh and I want to take her out of the school and put her back to private prek and just take her for her services. We have no clue how we go about doing this. I put a call into her school team leader last week and still haven't heard back. Can we make changes to her iep or pull her from the program and still get services?

You would need to contact the CPSE committee at you school district and discuss your concerns they would have to have another meeting to amend the IEP.

do they usually listen to the parents wants? I felt like we were bullied a little bit. I can't Shake the feeling that my dd hates going to school and sits in a dark classroom for 1.5 hours a day. I just feel like it's wasting her time and I'd rather put her somewhere she can at least talk above a whisper and learn more.

This and putting her in integrated or private pre k is your choice! Maybe having the services at school are more convenient but it's certainly not necessary and many people bring their kids for services outside of school. Good luck!

Absolutely they have to listen to the parents. You are the most important part of the committee. As far as from withdrawing her from her current program, you don't need anyone's permission for that !!! Just withdraw her.

I never sent my daughter to a developmental pre-k. I sent her to a private preschool, which I believed in. My daughter only went part time but she had a SEIT. In fact all together she had 7 SEIT hours, the year before she had 10 SEIT hours. I specifically made sure the IEP was written that SEIT hours could be 'home, community, school". As far as speech, my daughter had a SLP come to her private preschool, and another SLP come to her home. We had 4x 30 speech, and OT, 3x30 that came to our home.

You need to send a written request to the CPSE chair stating that you want to amend the IEP. You want an emergency CPSE meeting. They have to respond to you in writing.

Does her current IEP state her support services are in "school" ? Or do they list other settings ? Do you want to keep her current SLP and OT etc ? (finding a new one may cause a delay). However, nothing is worse than keeping your daughter in a situation that she doesn't belong.

Don't ever let a school committee bully you into anything that goes against your gut. Laws are in place to help your child. Sorry to say this but one should never fully trust a 'school committee" they have a different agenda then you do.

Do you have other school options? My son goes to a developmental pre-school and they are requried to follow state curriculm which included no naps. Currently he is in a self contained class but he is certainly on a pre-k curriculm...phonics, sight words, counting, etc. It does not sound like this school is a good fit. It should be noted that the school my son attends is also used as an indistrict UPK

They should listen to your concerns and hopefully will give you the original services

They recommended a preschool program and she is receiving her OT, PT and Speech there. You can pull her out of the program but at this point her IEP has services being provided within the preschool program. you need to go back to committee and request her services be provided either at home, speech office or at the preschool you are going to put her in. Its tough to get OT and PT but many agencies have wonder sensory gyms and therapy rooms that can accommodate you.

Re: I want to take my dd out of her integrated classroom ?

Thank you all. I'm hoping tomorrow to speak to her teacher, call the school district and request a meeting. I'd love to take her for her ot, pt and speech at the school she is in and just put her in a private school a few days a week. She is very bright and I just feel like she isn't learning anything new and the whole nap time thing is just ridiculous.

The nap time I agree, would bother me too. I would research other special Ed preschools. A few I'm familiar with don't have a nap time even for the EI classes.
