Cops: Dad dangled baby, threatened to kill him
The father of a 10-month-old boy was arrested early Wednesday after he grabbed the baby away from his mother at knifepoint and dangled the child from a second-floor landing in Hempstead, police said.
Samuel Jose Salvador, 26, threatened to kill the baby if his mother called police, but a friend of the woman managed to wrest the child back from Salvador, who then fled, police said.
The boy suffered a superficial wound to his cheek but did not require immediate medical attention, police said.
Salvador of Jackson Street, Hempstead, was charged with burglary, attempted kidnapping and assault following the incident late Tuesday night.
The suspect forced his way into the 20-year-old mother's Hempstead apartment at about 10:40 p.m. The unidentified woman attempted to hold the door closed -- but Salvador "forcibly broke the door down," police said.
Once inside the apartment, police said, Salvador attempted to grab the baby from the mother and, when she fought back, police said he "produced a knife" and threatened to kill her if she didn't turn over the child.
Salvador grabbed the boy and "intentionally cut the baby's cheek," causing a superficial four-inch long cut, police said.
Then, police said, Salvador dangled the baby from the landing before the friend came to the rescue.
Following a brief investigation, Salvador was arrested on Main Street in Hempstead by Bureau of Special Operations officers at about 1:35 a.m. Wednesday.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
