Ice Cream, Salad Dressings, etc.

I know that you can't eat Caesar salad dressing because of the uncooked eggs, same for mayo, hollandaise, etc...but I was noticing that other salad dressings have egg in them too, so does that mean you can't eat those either? Like some ranches, honey mustards, usually creamy dressings. And for ice cream, most brands have eggs or egg yolk in them, and they're obviously not cooked...so do I need to stay away from those as well? Luckily it seems Breyer's doesn't use eggs in their ingredients, so that's at least an option. Has anyone been specifically told not to eat these foods?

Re: Ice Cream, Salad Dressings, etc.

I've never heard of that before.

I would think that homemade dressings with raw eggs are a no-no but anything bottled should be fine.

My dr. never told me to stay away from anything, just to eat healthy and everything in moderation. With that said, I obviously have stayed away from lots of cafferine, raw meats/fish/eggs and anything that might have bacteria, I think it's best to use your judgement bc otherwise you won't eat anything Chat Icon

if you are buying these at the supermarket, most do not contain raw egg. if you are at a restaurant and you are concerned just ask. but you dont have to worry about store bought ice creams and salad dressings - they DO NOT contain raw egg and if they did they would have to tell you on the packaging. even most restaurants are using pasteurized eggs (which are fine) and not raw egg in their dressings/ice creams, etc.

Mayonaise is definitely ok. I never heard of having to stay away from it.

Exactly what she said!

Only if you're eating homemade mayo would you have anything to worry about. But commercially made items must use pasteurized eggs, which are fine. If not, the label must very specifically say "contains 'raw' or unpasteurized milk or eggs."

Most of the time you'd see this when it comes to certain raw cheeses that are imported.

I have heard not to have soft serve ice cream from places like carvel simply because bacteria can breed in the machines that are rarely fully cleaned, but my doctor did not say anything to me about that. He just said no sushi and no lox / smoked salmon (my one HUGE craving that I cannot wait to eat again!!!!). Also, no undercooked meats or fish.

I just wish that in the ingredients label for the eggs it said "pasteurized" though...on cheeses and stuff it usually says "pasteurized milk, pasteurized cream" etc...so why not use that verbiage for the eggs too? I'd feel so much more comfortable lol.

Re: Ice Cream, Salad Dressings, etc.

Do you have a history of getting sick from these products? Not to say that it isn't important to be more careful now, but stressing yourself out unnecessarily is probably worse than being overly meticulous about checking labels. I'd avoid caesar dressing at restaurants, but other than that, it's not a big deal.

Also, check the expiration date on these items. If it's a year away, you know it has to have been pasteurized to be preserved. If it's two weeks away, you might have something to be nervous about so avoid it.

Don't make yourself crazy with assumptions--talk to your doctor. He/She will be able to give you a specific list of what is a definite no-no; anything else is fine in moderation.

What she said. Restruants will be more than happy to tell you if they used raw eggs and honestly I think it is a rarity now.

Ice cream is totally fine too, I did hear from this board to avoid soft serve ice cream, but my doctor told me it wasn't a problem and I've had soft serve yogurt and ice cream this pregnancy.

Don't stress and talk to your doctor. The only food my doctor told me to avoid was smoked salmon, certian high mercury fishes, and sushi.

Same here. Most products that are bottled/packaged and sold in supermarkets are pasteurized and don't use raw eggs. I wouldn't stress over it! Chat Icon
