Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
My intention is to get some things done this winter on the house, not sure if we actually will. Does anyone else do this? Wait to do certain indoor things until you've got nothing better to do outside?
So far on my list:
Living room: crown molding, upgrade tv/stereo components, put up window treatments, replace old thermostat with digital.
Kitchen: put on new knobs and pulls we already bought, rip down wallpaper backsplash, replace backsplash with something nicer, rip up carpet (yes, carpet in the kitchen) and put down something like linoleum, replace 2 light fixtures, have one outlet fixed.
Bedroom: find out if we can have wood floors done without moving our really heavy bed out of the room! It was put together in the room and we would never be able to move it.
That's about it for us!

We hope to gut renovate one bathroom and replace our banister over the colder months.

Re: Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
Hopefully get some LR furniture.
Buy some bookcases for our library area.
Get some pictures up in our hallway - I need to have some prints framed from our honeymoon.
That's pretty much it!
Greenfreak - these things work really well. Link

Re: Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
We have lots of projects.
OK, inside projects are:
- Redoing our Laundry Room. This room is right off of the Family Room and it's really ugly. It also leads to the backyard as a walk through, so we really need to make it nice. That will be are biggest project over the winter. I can't wait. A nice clean laundry room.
- Print pics out from our wedding and honeymoon to hang throughout the house.
- Clean up and get rid of lots of stuff from our 2 spare bedrooms.
I think that is enough.
ETA: Finish our Master Bedroom. Hang pics, install picture ledges....done. Oh maybe even crown molding in this room as well. We love how it came out in the Family Room.

Re: Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
I totally forgot about the bathrooms. I must be blocking it out of my mind because we have to rip down wallpaper. After all the horror stories here, I'm worried about that one.
JennZ, those things look great, thanks! My biggest problem is that it's a king sized wood bed in a 10x14 room and it won't fit through the door. I asked my dad if wood refinishers will work around furniture if it can be moved, and he said he didn't think so.
Jen, are you going to take a break? Sheesh! Where did you get that crown molding from again? I have to check that out.

Re: Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
We are just finishing up our family room. DH painted yesterday and furniture is coming on Thursday.
Installing a utility sink in the basement.
I am determined to hang pictures in the hallways and staircases.
Clean out office - it's been our storage room and is definately a Clean Sweep room contender.
Organize my craft space. I have a corner of the basement but it isn't quit user friendly. It needs organization. I want to start scrapbooking again.
Clean out the kitchen. In the spring we are going to repaint the cabinets.

We (and when I say 'we' I mean DH) will be finishing our stairs, re-doing our downstairs bathroom and laying down tile in our entryway into our kitchen.

Re: Ideas for cold weather improvements to the house
Currently sanding and cleaning up the stairs (they were carpeted), so I can stain them and finish them. I have raw materials to build custom bookshelves for my library. Start working on making a Master Suite upstairs. We have a bedroom and a bathroom, but I want to add a door to make it a suite, and build another closet, and perhaps take a wall down.
Of course, none of this (besides the stairs, which I am currently working on) may actually get done, but that's my list....

Take a break......I don't know how to do that. Though this weekend, I just cleaned a little and did wash. See we relaxed.
We bought the crown molding at Lowe's. The molding it self is a contractors pack, so it's less money. I believe it cost about $56 for almost 100 sq ft......I think it was. Not positive. And the plinth blocks, (the corner and center pieces) we bought at Lowe's also. Depending on the size, they range in prices....$4-8....about. If you buy the contractors pack, you would have more than enough for your bedroom and more. We had just a little left over from our Family Room which is 15'x25', so it's a large pack. I believe they also sell both of these at Home Depot. Any questions, please just ask.
