Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
I have to share this....since Im not SOLD on the fact that my boys are identical. It dosent run in my family at all....and at early sonos, two in one sack=Identical.
Born and a yr later, I DONT SEE IT! I have many who dont see it either.
I have a friend, who had twin boys 6 months after me. Her mom has told me how it does run in family. My friend was told Fraternal from day one.
well, 6 months old now and those boys look TOO MUCH ALIKE! I cant tell them apart.
with that, I told her mom about the Affliated Genetics Twin testing. She ordered the test and results are back.
The Fraternal boys are actually IDENTICAL. SO I was right.
I so need to get this test done for my boys. I have to know.
I did so much reading and research and fraternal are for the most part genetic and identical arent (or in most cases).
Esp if it meant, I started a genetic line of twins, I would want to know.

this is interesting. Do you twins look alike? I know mine are fraternal since they dont look alike and they were in 2 different sacs. And they are two different blood types.
My mom is an identical triplet so I always wondered what the genetic disposition was.

Re: Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
i want to get my boys tested too. they were mono-di twins which means they are identical. and other than progesterone i had no other fertility treatments so it would make sense that they are identical, however, i dont think they look identical. they do resemble each other, but they have a different face shape and one is a couple pounds heavier than the other so that makes them look different too. i tried looking at their blood type from their NICU papers, but they left that info blank for 1 twin maybe ill just order the test and know for sure!
ETA: FYI - i just looked some pics of your boys to see if they looked identical or not - they def look identical to me!

You can ask your Ped for the blood types they should have it from the hospital reports. That's who told me the blood types of my babies.

because of my sons blood types and teeth coming in at the same time, my mom ordered the kit
15/15 DNA components = IDENTICAL
ALL the dr's told me fraternal
separate sacs, separate placentas...
I have the rarest identicals, they split so early!!

Re: Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
I've always heard fraternal are genetic and identical aren't as well.
My dad has twin sisters (one has passed away) and his grandmother had a twin sister as well. He said he has no idea if either set of twins were identical or fraternal.
I have been told since I got pregnant the girls were identical. The OB at delivery told me he was 100% sure they were identical because there was definitely just 1 placenta, not 2 placentas fused as one. But the girls were in separate amniotic sacs.
To me, they look alike but different. Everyone else tells me they look identical just one is a little skinny (there is 1.5lb difference between them).
I figured at their 1 year blood work I'd do the draw for the genetic testing as well, since that is truly the only way to know if they are identical or fraternal.

Re: Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
Whats funny with us is at delivery they told me the girls were identical. One placenta.
For anyone who has ever seen my girls, they are NOT identical. They are very very different from features to skin tone!
So recently I asked my OB about it when I was there, and he said " Oh Hun, Placentas fuse together all the time to look like one"....
So While I dont 'know' for sure, I do KNOW cause you just have to look at my girls to know. lol
But if they looked alike...I would do that test just to know for sure!

Re: Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
My identical twins were mono-di. They look identical to everyone in the world but me.
I want to do the test but MrDrMatt has assured me they MUST be identical otherwise we would make medical history.
I still want the test . If I am right I want to go on all the talk show and talk about my medical miracles.

Re: Identical Vs Fraternal..something to share
I can see how it would be hard to know if twins are identical or fraternal if there's two placentas because it could go either way then, but I assumed all mono/di twins are identical? Mine aren't born yet, but I'm sure there's one placenta (as opposed to two placentas fused together) because for a time one twin was stealling more blood flow than the other so one's fluids were really high and the other really low though they're both balanced out now.
