Idol Question
Forgive my ignorance...this is my first year watching American Idol and I have a few questions.
Since it is America that chooses who the next American Idol will be, and that person then wins a recording contract... what are the consequences of Sanjaya winning this thing? Will Fox have to change the way the votes are counted? I mean are they going to loose money, since I don't think that many people who voted for Sanjaya will be buying his album?

Re: Idol Question
Well, they may lose Simon...he said he wouldn't come back if Sanjaya won. But, I'm thinking they'll pay him enough $$ for him to get over it.
But, losing Simon would mean bad things for the show, I think. Low ratings=revenue loss.

Ain't gonna happen If it came down to the final, they wouldn't "let" it happen.
As for consequences... well, we don't know. They might change the way votes are calculated, maybe give the judge's votes some weight...or maybe they'll just stop putting undeserving people through!

Thats what I was saying last night...the judges let him make it to Hollywood, they have to bear some responsibility!

guys
fox is not gonna rig the voting to get rid of sanjaya
if this kid's gonna win, he's gonna win
if an investigation was launched into how the votes were tallied and it came out, there would be all sorts of legal troubles for fox
all you need is one disgruntled idol employee to get fired and that person would squawk to the press like a canary in heat.
Then you risk lawsuits from the sponsors
loss of advertisers
lawsuits from contestants who were voted off seasons before.
It would be a mess. No way will they do it.
The judges made their bed - they let him through - he's fair game

They don't have to rig the voting - they just have to LIE...and say there was an error, or whatever. Or maybe they'll just change the rules slightly half way through before Sanjaya even has a chance to make it to the finals.
I think it's naive to think they can't sneakily change the votes, or sway them, or fudge the numbers in SOME way to get the outcome they want. I'm SURE there is some fine print somewhere that would protect them in the legal long run.
The question all comes down to money - where do they stand to lose more money:
A - if people find out their voting can be rigged and advertisers pull out, ratings go down, etc (IF - big IF - people were to find out AND believe that the voting was shady)
Or
B - shelling out the money for the recording contract and who knows what other promotional things that have long since been lined up for this season's winner - PLUS undermining the "integrity" of the show as a true singing competition where America decides....
Bottom line - they make sure Sanjaya loses then maybe there are legal consequences but if they LET Sanjaya win - kiss of death for the show.

Re: Idol Question
It doesn't even matter if he wins. He won't get very far. William Hung was around for awhile and then vanished.
Everyone thinks it is a big joke but it's not far to the people that actually like the show. I hope it returns next year but they will have to set up a different way to vote. Maybe just once per household or something Or make you pay per call.

Re: Idol Question
I am a fanjaya so if he wins I will def buy his album!
Honestly, I think in time his luck will run out. There is still a long way until the end and people will eventually get sick of him and his hair and the votes slow down

Re: Idol Question
I actually think Sanjaya has a sweet very soothing voice. I do not think he is up to par for this show which is supposedly the "best of the best" Honestly I don't think anyone is that great except for Melinda. Listen to her sing she is many levels above everyone else there.
And Raven-I respectfully disagree with you. How about the whole scandal that arose from Paula with that kid? If anything it brought more attention (and advertisers) to the show.

Trust me. Sanjaya won't win. The same thing happened a few years with John Stevens. Eventually he will be booted. It is just a hot topic right now.

Re: Idol Question
Depends on how you look at it. My DH and my FIL think its rigged, so they would say he wouldn't win because they would know the consequences. I think that if its rigged its not an issue. If its not, maybe they will limit one vote per person, or split the vote between the judges and the audience, like DWTS.

Re: Idol Question
I wonder if this is going to damage the poor 17 yr old kid.
I mean, how would YOU like to look in the mirror everyday and see someone that's only in a competition because some other people think its funny to keep the WORST around, and they freely advertise so?!?!
