IEP question- when requests can't be accommodated
My son is 3.5 yo, ASD, attends a special needs pre-school. I had my CPSE annual review meeting earlier this month, I asked for at-home parent training. We currently get parent training 1x a month with the school psychologist during school hours. I can't attend because I work FT, so DH attends since he has a variable work schedule. I told the director of the CPSE that I feel at a disadvantage by not being able to attend parent training and I need help with managing DS' behaviors at home, which would be best served by a parent trainer or behaviorist at home. The director made up some BS about how they have to adhere to the program he is currently in, but made a compromise that I would receive an hour of additional parent training per month by phone with the school psychologist. The school psychologist said that in all of her years there she has never heard of parent training via phone and they may not be able to accommodate that request. If that is the case then what is my next step? Do I get another meeting with the CPSE if this request in the IEP cannot be accommodated? It kills me that these school districts try to penny pinch where ever they can... I would be happy with just an hour a month of at home training.

That is just BS. Parent training is offered where ever needed, at the home, in the community or at school if the parent requests it. I had my parent training at a movie theater once because they were helping her with sounds and the dark. Who is telling you this the school or your district? I would put in writing where and when exactly you want to have parent training and send it to the school and your school district.

Thanks... it was the district that told me this (director of CPSE). That is why they tried to make a compromise of sorts by giving me the "phone training" that the school itself is telling me they may not be able to accommodate.

These school districts are infuriating. Are you on the facebook group Long Island Special Education Parent Network? If not you should join and ask your question there. Danielle Brooks who is a fantastic advocate usually answers the posts and she will be able to direct you better on what to say to the district. What district are you in?

Great, thanks I will look into this. I am in a district in SE Nassau.
ETA I am always worried about posting in those groups on FB because I always feel like school district personnel are lurking... LOL maybe I'm just being a worry wart.

Oh they are definitely lurking but as long as you don't use names there is nothing wrong with asking a question. Maybe if they know more parents are trying to find out the true answers then they would stop playing games lol. Good luck!!

If you have private health insurance, you can go through your insurance and they will set you up with parent training at home as well as certain services at home if your child qualifies.
