If the doc thinks the baby is measuring big and wants me to have a sonogram and then we can talk...
What exactly does that mean? Talk about getting induced? And what does that mean? Can you still have a vaginal birth and be induced? And what's too big? I'm 37 1/2 weeks and the doc thinks the baby may be about 8lbs right now...

I have heard that they would induce you early if the baby is getting too big. And yes, you can still go vaginally with an induction...
Good luck!

Sonograms are not accurate enough..it can be off by more than a 1lb. There is NO reason, unless you have some medical condition, to force a c/s or induction on you. Women all over the World have big babies without interventions.

Agreed. If the doctor says your babe is measuring big and wants to discuss an induction ask if you can wait and try to go naturally (if that's what you want). There's no reason for an induction, because those estimates can be off by an entire pound! Ask around on LIF and you'll find tons of moms who were induced or had c-sections because their babies were measuring large, but ended up being born at totally normal weights. Unless you have GD, it's very unlikely that your body will grow a baby that's too big for you to birth.

Agreed as well. This happened to me. Knowing what I know now - I'd never opt for an induction unless the growth sono had the baby at 11 or 12 lbs.

I do not have GD and my baby was measuring 9.15lbs at 35 weeks. I was tested many times for it. Sometimes your body does grow a baby too big for you to birth.
My first DD was only 8.7lbs and could not fit through my pelvis. I was in labor for 30+ hours trying to get her out.
Not everyone's body is made to have big babies or even average size ones.

while this may be true, i think this is definitely an exception to the norm.
there is no reason for the average healthy woman to think that she cannot have a vaginal birth with a 'normal' size baby, and even one that may be a little on the larger size.

Re: If the doc thinks the baby is measuring big and wants me to have a sonogram and then we can talk...
with my first, baby was measuring 8lbs, 2 oz at 37 weeks.
I asked OB, "at what point do we say baby is too big, time to go in and get him?"
Ob's response..."we don't....baby will let us know when he's ready to come out"
my water broke exactly 1 week early. I ended up with a c/s due to failure to progress (even on pitocin) and baby was 9lbs, 11 oz.

It is "true". There is no "may" about it.
I didn't say she couldn't have a vaginal birth. I was responding to what another poster said about big babies based on my own experiences.

I wasn't trying to say that your experiences weren't "true".
I was really just talking about your statement "Not everyone's body is made to have big babies or even average size ones."
As I said before, most healthy women are completely capable of having a normal vaginal birth with an average size baby or even a baby a little bit larger, as long as there aren't any medical issues that would prevent it. That's why I said that your statement about all women not being able to have big or average size babies was an exception to the norm.
And, as a pp said, it is also true that sonograms aren't 100% reliable when trying to determine the baby's weight.
So there really shouldn't be an induction or planned c-section if it is based only on the estimated size of the baby.

My mom gave birth to a 9lb 11 oz and a 10 lb 1 oz baby vaginally with no drugs. It CAN be done.
But that was also 30 years ago...

Re: If the doc thinks the baby is measuring big and wants me to have a sonogram and then we can talk...
Estimated size on a sonogram is a guestimate and can be off by a pound or more. I personally would allow things to progess naturally in your situation unless you have other problems that the Dr. has yet to mention like a very small pelvis. Discuss your options with the OB and make an informed decision that is right for you. Do not feel pressured to have an induction or C-Section if you are not comfortable with it.

Thanks girls. I'll go for the sono and if everything seems ok, I'll opt to have the baby come on its own. I'm very healthy and have had no problems with this pregnancy and i'm fairly young..27. Maybe i'll try going for an extra long walk tonight to get things moving on its own!
