I would say walls, leave the floors for last. With the traffic coming in and out of a house when you first move in, I would leave it for last.

Now reading the other posts, it's true on really depends on what you mean. Are you just painting the walls or doing sheetrock work? Are you getting hardwood or carpet installed?

Floors first.

It is a messy job - even as clean as the guys are, you will have dust everywhere. It is easier to have the floor done and then covered, prior to painting.

when you say walls do you mean sheetrock?
we had our bathroom done and the sequence they did was all sheet rock first, then tape and spackle, then floor then paint and moldings.

Walls first. Sheet rock makes a very big mess. You could put painters tape on your baseboards or don't put baseboards up until after the floors are done. This way the stain and poly don't get on your baseboards.

In your case I would do the floors after the walls unless your just painting then you can cover the floors with builders paper.Chat Icon

If you are just painting, I would do the floors first. You will have tons of dust from the sanding, and our people were none too careful about hitting our molding either. If we painted it in advance, I would have been really annoyed.

If sheetrock is involved though, or you are removing walls, I would do that first.

We had a similar problem with our walls and we fixed our walls first, then the floors second.

WE gutted our lower level and we are putting up insulation and sheetrocking first, then installing new flooring.

Kathleen, I'm thinking you'll have to resheetrock taking down the original walls first. Ask my DH

This is what my painter and my fllor guy recommended. So that is what we did, floors first then walls. Floors had to be covered with red rosin (sp?) paper to prevent scratches.

We've always done walls first, then floors.

This is what I said, based on if you had to simply paint your walls.

If you have to do more than paint them, such as sheetrock, etc, then surely do the walls first.
