An adult dog might be your best bet.
They are already housebroken and usually trained.

Besides, young and adult dogs make the BEST
dogs.

spay/neuter your pet.

Re: If you and your DH work full time

My DH is out maybe between 9-3 and works from a home office the other hours. I usually come home for my lunch break 12:30-1:30, so Gizmo is never alone for more than 4 hours at a time. Now that he is getting older (14 1/2 years old) he will sometimes have accidents in the house over 6-7 hours (we don't crate him).
I was just talking to my DH about this... if we ever get another dog I don't know how we will be able to train it while working full-time.

Re: If you and your DH work full time

We got Martin when the DH worked nights. But that changed i think a month after having him. Martin was a quick learn as far as pooping outside.

But we then brought him to my sisters to watch him during the day for about another month

After that we crated him and it worked out just fine

I think that getting a puppy and working 8 hours a day is very hard unless you have someone, a friend, or you or your DH that can come home and walk it....

Re: If you and your DH work full time

We take ours to day care 2 days a week (T/Th) and have a walker (our neighbor) the other 3 days 2 x a day.

I also walk her am and pm and we try to go to the dog park on the at home days.

Re: If you and your DH work full time

we adopted a dog and are so happy that he was already housetrained!! we did not have to do anything and he adjusted very quickly. our dog gets walked 4 times a day DH walks him around 6:30, I walk him before I leave (around 9:30), DH walks again around 4:30 and he gets walked at night before bed.

please keep in mind that puppies are A LOT of work. besides the training you have to constantly watch them, they go through a teething period and they need to be socialized properly. if you don't have time for this, i suggest you adopt a dog that's already been trained!

good luck!

Re: If you and your DH work full time

I went home at lunch to walk Chewie when he was little. I get out of work at 2pm so I now walk him when I get home.

Re: If you and your DH work full time

When I was working full time my husband would bring our dogs to work (he's a veterinarian), so we were pretty lucky.

They learned to hold it (most of them anyway...the Chihuahua still cannot) DH gets home way earlier than me, so he walks them when he gets home & then most of the time we have playtime until after dinner with them in the yard.

Re: If you and your DH work full time

We can leave our boy home and he is fine (he is 9 years old). I go in at around 11...come home for lunch around 2:30/3:00...and the Michael gets home about 4:30/5:00. So he is not alonme for too, too long.

Good Luck. Chat Icon

Re: If you and your DH work full time

We have a doggy door with a fenced in backyard so Casey and Tally can go in and out as they please.....but we still take them for walks for more exercise.

Also, lots of squeakies for toys. Chat Icon
