Re: If you are bilingual

Both my parents are Italian - born & raised, I was thought Italian first and learned English in school...FH does not speak any second languages..He wants us to teach our children Italian ...more than likely we will send them to school to learn it and also have my mom speak to them in Italian only....although I speak it - It won't be spoken in our home bc FH does not understand it...the only way I feel for kids to learn a second language is for them to be surrounded by it...jmo

Re: If you are bilingual

I am desperately trying to teach Marissa to speak Spanish. She's going on 6 and understands most of it but has a hart time speaking. So if any of you will be teaching your kids 2 languages...do start now. Otherwise it doesn't get any easier. She says to me "No quiere Español!". Chat Icon

Re: If you are bilingual

see that is hard. If DH speaks it to the kids at dinner, I won't know what they are saying. I wish I could speak it, but 3 years of classes has left me with a strong vocabulary, but no ablilty to make sentences.

DH said that PRs speak so much diffently than Spainards anyway, so that I should not stress it and just pick it up as the kids learn it.

But aren't the kids going to be little sponges to it?

They are like sponges when they are small, but if they don't learn it before a certain age, it will be hard for them to get it later on. DH and I are both Latinos but we rarely speak Spanish to each other or Marissa. So, she gets to speak it only around grandparents.

Re: If you are bilingual

I'm sure that you'll pick it up as he speaks it to the kids. I picked it up not only from many years of spanish class, but from listening to Dh's mom. PR's speak more of a Spanglish and many of their words mean different things compared to other spanish speaking people.

Re: If you are bilingual

DH is bilingual. He is Polish (came here when he wa 13)

I am learning a little bit of Polish, but I doubt I will ever be able to be completely fluent.

I think DH wants to teach our future children to speak Polish so they can converse with their cousins (BIL's kids) even though the cousins speak perfect English (DH's niece and nephew attend a British school in Slovakia where they are living now)

I have to admit that I am intimidated by the idea that our children will probably learn Polish easier and faster than me and thus will be able to converse with DH without me knowing what they are saying. It is already difficult to live with DH speaking to his parents in Polish in front of me all the time even though they all speak English.

Re: If you are bilingual

I only speak English. DH speaks English and Italian ( I think he learned Italian first and then english) and his parents are from Italy so Italian was their first language although they now speak english with accents.
Our Son is 2 1/2 and I fully support them and my DH speaking Italian around him. He understands alot of Italian already and says some words in Italian ( he also knows how to say those words in english)

He started speaking in general a little later then most other kids but he WAS learning and hearing 2 different languages and I am sure that was a little confusing. But now he is at the same level as other kids and has the advantage of knowing two languages.

Thats not true b/c as your DH is teaching your children you will catch on as well. I didn't know a drop of Italian and now I am amazed at how when my MIL and FIL are speaking I understand SO MUCH of what they say. It suprised them as well when one day they said something in Italian and I answered in EnglishChat Icon

Its fun to help your child learn as well. DH helps teach me so I can also teach our son.

He is right!! It is very different than what we learn in school. Me too I have 3 yrs high school and 2 yrs college and cant speak it that well but too have a strong vocabulary. I am going to be spending a lot more time with my grandmother for the language and to learn the traditions of all that great spanish food, yumyum.
