If you are in your forever home
Where is your living room furniture from? Is it formal? If you have both a living room and a den do you have any distinctions between the rooms?

Re: If you are in your forever home
Our family room furniture is from Raymour and Flanigan. We also have a formal living room which is currently empty except for a desk. Our plan it to turn it into a sitting room.

Living room furniture is from The Place and Raymour and Flanigan, and a piece from Peter Andrews...not sure if I would consider it formal, but we plan to have it for years to come.
The finished basement which will be a man cave/entertainment den will be a bit more relaxed and we probably won't spend as much on the furniture in there.
this is what we have in the living room:

Re: If you are in your forever home
Our living room is pretty formal. I mean, we do use it for entertaining and holidays, but it's basically a sitting room. But we don't use it for everyday hanging out (and we don't watch tv there.
In the formal living room, we have a couch, 2 chairs, and 3 tables from Bassett (I liked that I could pick out fabric for custom upholstery -- my throw pillows on the couch match the striped fabric on the chairs), a really great armoire/bar cabinet that we got for a steal at Fortunoff's right before it closed, an upholstered bench that was my late mil's, and a large area rug from Bloomingdale's furniture store.
Our den is a much more casual, comfortable room. We have a small sectional in a chocolate brown microfiber fabric (don't remember where I got it, but it was a store on 110 in Farmingdale), a tv/entertainment console from Raymour & Flanagan for our flat screen, an brown leather ottoman (this is my second one -- it's from target) that has a top that flips over and becomes a tray and houses 2 smaller ottoman's for extra seating. There's a fireplace in the den, and we love hanging out there -- esp on a cozy winter night -- to watch tv or a movie. Also, my den leads out to our back patio, and also leads into the garage, so it's a much more high traffic area.
We have wall-to-wall carpeting in the den, and hardwood flooring (with a formal looking area rug) in our formal living room.

Re: If you are in your forever home
We got ours from Out of the Box in Islip.
I was very particular. Think about what you want.
My criteria:
* 3 cushions on the sofa - didn't want two long ones, then that third person is awkwardly sitting on the seam.
This is what I didn't want:
* def wanted it to be skirted
* def wanted semi attached back cushions - we had loose ones and after a while they looked like crap.
I thought I thought of everything, but we should have went with a deeper seat...
All in all - I love my couches.
eta: I don't consider my LR formal, but someone else may. We lounge in there though - feet on coffee table, eat dinner on TV tables, etc. Our basement is unfinished so it's the only place we've got.

Re: If you are in your forever home
With 2 crazy kids, we don't do "formal".
We have a den, with 2 great micro fiber couches and an antique entertainment center. There is also the fireplace, kids table and chairs and train table in there.
In the living room, we have a dark brown leather seat and a large hand painted armoire.

Re: If you are in your forever home
We are not in our forever home... we are still only renting, but I have the same exact style as my sister... and shes' in hers... LOL She has both a den and a living room. The den has SUPER comfy couches, chairs, and such. Like where you sit on it you just want a warm blanket, light the fire, and watch TV.
Her living room tho is formal, but not too formal that you feel like you shouldn't be touching anything. She has this beautiful glass table in the center, with these fancy couches that have a light pattern on them. In the corner she has a curio cabinet with some little nick0nacks in it. and her piano. It's very comfortable feeling, but looks elegent. That's where we all stay when she has alot of family over... and the kids playin the den.
I love her house. I really need to take pics to share LOL

Re: If you are in your forever home
Mostly Ethan Allen (almost all rooms) but sectional is from Pottery barn. Very happy with all of it. Not super formal but not too casual either.

Re: If you are in your forever home
wood furniture (media console, console, coffee table and end table) from Pottery Barn. Sleeper sofa, two chairs and ottoman from Raymour and Flannigan. We're still looking for a good rug. We have a crappy one from overstock right now. We do not have a den and would in no way consider the room formal. With a 2.5 year old and another on the way I would never have a formal living room.
