If you bought a car and didn't get the extended warranty... what do you do when the original basic warranty is going to expire?
DH has always had hand-me-down old cars and I've always leased... until we bought a new Jeep about 2 years ago. Now that we are almost hitting the miles of the warranty, what do we do?
We were thinking of trading it in but haven't seen any good deals out there lately and I really love the Jeep so we're going to wait.
Do we get an extended warranty? How much is that?
Or do we go with no warranty? But of course you know the minute the warranty expires something will happen that will cost us $ right?!

In my family growing up (and still now!), we ran cars into the ground. We've never had an extended warranty on any vehicle.
Yes, $$ repairs do eventually come up, but IMO having a $600 repair every couple of years is still cheaper than a car payment. If you paid $200/mo for a car, that is $2400 a year--so making one $600 repair every other year on the old car is still much much cheaper.
ETA: Obviously, when something MAJOR goes wrong that is super $$ (like a transmission or engine) it might be in your best interest to get a new car if the cost to repair is more than the value of the car.

also be careful with extended warranties they seem to be the subject of a lot of scams - they seem proper but they don't pay for what they should - really read the fine print

That's what i'm worried about, that even if we do spend the money on an extended warranty, it's not going to cover everything we think. We're going to go to the dealer this weekend...

I did not get the extended warranty but through Geico I have a warranty that takes over when my car warranty ends.

Re: If you bought a car and didn't get the extended warranty... what do you do when the original basic warranty is going to expire?
I bought my car and have no extended warrantee. Most of the things I have read about them say that they are a waste of money. My last car did have repairs as it got older, but as someone else said, whatever I paid in repairs was much less than what I would have paid for a car payment. Your car insurance premium also goes down as the car gets older.
I kept my last car until I started having more regular maintenance issues. If I can't rely on the car, and have to worry about bringing it to the shop unexpectedly all the time, it's time for a new car.

Same here. I've never bothered with an extended warranty, and so far I've never regretted that decision.

Re: If you bought a car and didn't get the extended warranty... what do you do when the original basic warranty is going to expire?
I've only ever purchased an extended warranty on one vehicle - my truck.
With the others, we kept the cars and knew we had financial responsibility for any breakdowns. I've been lucky (and picky with which brands of car I purchase), so haven't had any major problems. We drive our cars until their useful life is over.
With the truck, we purchased it used. We bought the extended warranty for several reasons, not the least of which is that I KNEW going into it that we were buying a truck with one of the less desirable diesel engines Ford made. We also use this truck for heavy work - hauling horses, heavy payloads, etc., all of which put extra wear and tear on the transmission. It will also be used very soon for our business, too. Knowing aa this, we figured the extended warranty (which we researched carefully) was for the best.
For our regular cars, we declined the extended warranties.
The extended warranties are expensive and not all of them are created equal. Some are really not very desirable... Do your research if you do purchase one!
