If you carry epipen

Do you just carry it in your purse/diaper bag? How worried should I be about carrying it around in summer temperatures?

How many months do you usually get before they expire? Opened ours to find we only have 11 months before expiration (expiration printed on box by manufacturer). We're not even due back at allergist before it expires...

If you carry epipen

Allergist or Ped should be able to refill that over the phone/electronically without a visit with no problem knowing that the one you have is going ot expire. I don't recall ever carrying it any way other than just in my purse/beach bag when I was carrying it for my sister (she carries it for herself now, ugh, can't believe she's a teenager). Thankfully, we never needed to use it (her anaphylactic reaction was before we knew she had a true allergy and didn't have an epipen.... my dad and SM were in denial for years, even after that event).

If you carry epipen

i still use a diaper bag so the epipen is in the center zipper of the diaper bag. i put it in an allergy alert bag where you can also store Benadryl and list emergency contact info. if i am with my son and no diaper bag, i grab the allergy bag and toss it in my purse.

most epi pens i have gotten expire in about 12-18 months. i always check the expiration date before i leave the pharmacy to make sure the expiration date isn't less than a year. i wouldn't hesitate asking them for a different one with a longer expiration date in the future. they can be $$$ you should be able to refill it without visiting the allergist. it's an emergency medicine that you may have to use at any time.

as for temperatures, i try not to keep it exposed to long periods of high or low temps. i believe the instructions have recommendations. because i keep it in 2 bags, i feel that it's pretty insulated for short term exposure to higher temps (if we spend the day outside and it's 80 degrees). you can purchase insulated carry bags for them too.

Thanks! I'm going to look for those insulated bags and an allergy bag too and then try to remember not to leave it in the car. I usually leave my diaper bag in the car if we'll be close by.

I could kick myself for not opening at the pharmacy. We paid $300...to get 18 months would be much nicer than 11. It actually looks like someone else refused it (has partially ripped off prescribing sticker under our sticker).

I carry one in my purse for my oldest son, and it should be fine unless you leave it in the car. We get a replacement every year. We use the AuviQ.

Re: If you carry epipen

I am a Mom of 2 kids with severe food allergies and I work for the company that makes Epi-Pen.

Things to know:

1) Check the date on box, before you leave pharmacy. Take nothing less than a 1 year expiration date.

2) Travel/Storage- you can store them in insulated pouch. You can pick one up in any store, or you can order one for free on
Epipen.com.

3) Register your pens on Epipen.com. You will be notified when they are about to expire, and you will also get $0 co-pay cards and educational information.

4) On your IPhone or Android, get the app:
My Epiplan.
You can put all of yours/your child's allergy info and parent and physician contact info. You can then share the app with any babysitter, your child's friend, etc

5) Epi-Pens for Schools- your child's Doctor or School Nurse can go on the Epi Pen website and register a school district. Then, each school in the district will get 2 free back Epi Pens.

6) Epi-Pen has partnered with Disney. There are pens located in all parks, hotels and cruise ships. Epi Pen logo can be found on all maps.

7) If anyone needs, please let me know. I can get you $0 co Pay cards. This means, that you can get 3-2 packs, 6 pens at a time for $0. This card is good until 12/31/15, for as many refills as you need.

I recently switched insurance and we have an HSA with a $5000 deductible. We are funding the HSA, but slowly and i am trying to get more pens. They want me to pay over $600 for 4 pens(2 2packs) even with the 0 co-pay card I have. Any suggestions?
