If you child has had tubes put in their ears, come in please
Mikayla has to go to the ENT doctor on Thursday to discuss this as an option
what determines if they do, indeed need tubes? What type of tests does the ENT doctor do?
She has had about 7 ear infections in the past 9 months so the ped referred me to the ENT doctor (her blood testing came back negative for allergies so that is not causing her ear infections)

Aw-poor Mikayla!
I have one friend whose DD had them put in, she is over two and doing fine. I don't have a lot more information though.

Steph-Reese had them put in so you can call or e-mail Steph and ask-but I understand it is arelatively simple and quick procedure. I assume he will look in her ears, give her a hearing test and look at her history

Aww, poor Miki! One of my nephews had them put in about 4 months ago and by later that day...he was playing, eating and drinking like nothing happened. The whole procedure took about 15 minutes.

Re: If you child has had tubes put in their ears, come in please
i'm a speech therapist and had some classes in hearing, PLUS i also had tubes TWICE when i was younger. the ENT will probably do a hearing test (they have special ways that they can check for young kids-they won't expect her to sit there and push a button whenever she hears a tone), and might do a test to check the response her ear drum has (doesn't hurt them AT ALL, basically they just put a little thing in their ear for like 2 seconds) the surgery itself is really pretty simple. They will put her to sleep with anesthesia, and the whole thing is pretty quick. I'll tell you that i had the tubes done when i was 5 and then again at 8... this was over 20 years ago, and i STILL remember how much better i could hear after that!! i remember coming home, standing in the kitchen and asking my parents " what is that noise??" they were so confused, until they realized i was talking about the refridgerator running!! I had never been able to hear it before! i still remember how much easier it was to hear everything. and it will definitely help with her speech development, too. being able to hear the sounds correctly is SO important! good luck- she'll be fine!

My youngest nephew had tubes put in. Not only did he have continual ear infections, but he was lagging way behind in speech (a common side effect of continual fluid in the ears). Within a few hours of him having the surgery he was like a different child.

Re: If you child has had tubes put in their ears, come in please
We have been going to an ENT for that last 2 months or so. E has had recurring ear infections since December. So many, I lost count. They did a hearing test, edthe pressure in her ears and looked for an infection. The doctor said she wasn't a candidate for tubes at that time especially since it was spring and better weather was on its way (hopefully reducing the amount of times she gets sick). She's had one infection since going to the ENT and he still said no tubes.
I'm guessing that she will have the same problem next winter and I hope they do the tubes....I'd rather her have tubes and be well that constantly being on antibiotics.
