If you dont have carpet in your basement

what do you have instead?

DH and I were all set to put carpet in our basement but it seems that everyone is trying to change our minds due to bad experiences they've had, pipes breaking, leaks, moisture, damp smell, etc..

but I cant think of anything else we'd rather do...except for wood but even with that, if we happen to have a leak or moisture, it would get ruined too..

Any ideas? TIA!

Re: If you dont have carpet in your basement

Right now we have a mix linoleum that it is old and ugly, and carpet tile. We had the same problem b/c I wanted to put carpet when we re-do it but it is just not worth it with the constant worrying about flooding, humidity, etc.

I think as much as I hate the idea we will have to put a nicer linoleum when we re-do it. We can also do ceramic tile but it is too cold and hard for my taste. Esp. since my son's play room will be down there.

We HAVE LAMINATE WOOD FLOORS. We did inexpensive ones that could easily be replaced if a leak should occur

My parents were telling us to do ceramic tile, but this is how I feel too, that it will be cold and when we do have kids they can get hurt on the tile. I guess we'll compare laminate wood to carpet and see the diff in price..If it costs about the same to replace, then I think we'll just stick w/ carpet. Hopefully we wont run into any water damage anytime soon.

I feel your pain!! My son is accident prone and has gotten hurt a number of times on my IL's ceramic tile basement, so I am very against it. ( Normally he would fall at home and no big deal.. he falls there and gets lumps on his head Chat Icon Chat Icon )

I would NOT do laminate in a basement with humidity. Esp. cheaper stuff.. it will warp in no time.
I was planning on doing a simple but nice ( is that possible? lol) linolieum and putting huge inexpensive area rugs. I figure if it floods all we have to do is pickup the carpet and dry clean or toss it. Won't be as expensive to replace or as difficult.
