if you get the mums around this time of year..
do you plant them? I always put them in a basket thingy but I'm told they last way longer if you plant them in the ground.

Re: if you get the mums around this time of year..
I planted mine in the ground. After I planted them a month ago, I changed my mind and wanted to move them around. They popped right up. They look very healthy. I also split a couple to place in a planter box. Everywhere I read I was told that you shouldn't do that. I was willling to risk it because I didn't think they looked right. My DH, who never complains about any decorating I do (thank god), tells me 'Uh honey, those flowers look like japanese bonsai in the planters. To make a long story short, I split them all and they look great! This was a month ago. I heard that they pop right out when you need to get rid of them in the late fall/winter. They are pretty resilient! Good Luck!

Are the ones that are sold in farm stands considered perrenials? I have read sometimes they are annuals, sometimes perrenials, but when you see them commercially sold that they are more than likely annuals. If that is the case I will leave them. Ya think I would've asked at the farm stand

I don't see why you couldn't plant them.

I put four pots on my stoop and planted three. Everything looks great.
Question...how often do you have to water them???

Re: if you get the mums around this time of year..
We planted mums last year and they came back this year huge and gorgeous! The rule is to cut them back at the beginning of July and then they will be full of buds by the fall. Before then, the looked like nice green plants in our beds.

I planted mine last fall and they have been in full bloom for a few months now and are huge. Once of them was dead in the pot for a really long time before I planted it and it came back this fall!
