If you had a child who didn't like the beach...
Any tips for getting them used to it? Matteo definitely is not loving the sand! And seems to be afraid to go in the water so I just let him sit on the beach towel and he's content playing with shells and stuff. But only for a little while.
Any tips from moms/dads who have been through this with their kids? THANKS!!

Yup... don't take them
I have no advice as I have not been to the beach in YEARS because mine do not like it.

That's Lauren. Won't go near the water. Is a pain in the butt about the sand - we try and keep her shoes on her, but when the sand gets in them, she crys to have them off, yet doesn't like walking on the sand barefoot
We've only done a day at the beach once, other times, we just go late in the day and let them play in the sand and not go in the water.
I've pretty much stuck to going to the pool this summer.

Re: If you had a child who didn't like the beach...
He seems afraid of the water, but he goes in the little pool at home. Maybe it's the size that scares him. He doesn't like bigger pools either.
The thing that stinks is my in-laws live right by a nice beach on the bay and he wants no parts! Maybe next year I guess.
Just thought maybe I could help him get over his fear of the sand and the water.

If he is happy on his blanket in the sand, well that doesn't sound like he is afraid. Maybe with time he will be happier in the water and on the sand, I would just keep trying a few more times.

True, maybe just have to keep on trying. He is happy on the blanket for oh say, 5 minutes. Then remembers he is near the sand and wants to leave!

Re: If you had a child who didn't like the beach...
How old is he?
Last summer DD (2 1/2) was deathly afraid of the ocean... would scream bloody murder if we even went within 10 feet of the ocean.... (Loved to go to the beach and play in the sand, but not the actual water)
What a difference a year makes! Can't get her out of the water this year, even if the surf and waves are crashing like mad..... She will play in the water for 2 hours straight...non-stop.
Maybe he's just at the age where he is afraid and it is too overwhelming? That's what I chalked it up to be with DD.
Maybe try again next year...

Re: If you had a child who didn't like the beach...
Until this past Friday, Jeremy HATED sand! He would not put his feet anywhere near the sand for fear of getting a piece on him. That is until my dad "broke" him! Now, he loves it I loved that he didn't like it since we would know that if we put him on the blanket or in his chair, he would still be there a minute later. Now, he is running all over the place! I am kidding by the way, it made our day on the beach so much more pleasant than it had been with him screaming everytime a spec of sand got on his foot.

Re: If you had a child who didn't like the beach...
May sound mean but I took him in the water with me and let him cry until he got used to it. I held him the whole time of course. Took about 30 minutes, but after that we couldn't keep him out of it. And the sand thing. He wasn't too fond of it at first but we bought him a sand shovel and bucket and showed him how to fill it and dump it out and LOVED it after that. I just had to let him fuss a bit.

Matthew doesn't like it either--he's 7.5 months now. I thought it was the heat that bothers him, but we tried going early this weekend, and he still didn't go for it. He's not crazy about the waves either, but he doesn't mind water.
We're giving up on it this summer and just taking him to the town pool--he loves that. Maybe next year.

When we took Julia to the beach last summer for the first time we thought she would hate the sand, but she actually didn't have a problem with it......we took her down to the water and thats when she flipped out--lol but my DH found a way to get her to like it by digging a big hole in the sand by the water and let her sit and play in it, she loved it.
