If you had a small baby at birth?

My babies were 4lb15oz and 5lb1oz at birth.. at their 1 month appointment they were 6lb1oz and 6lb4oz. They are gaining weight and the ped is happy with their weight gain, but when I see other babies the same age or younger (they will be 8 weeks on Tuesday) they seem so small!! I was just wondering - when do they start to catch up? How long do they stay little peanuts?

Christopher was on the smaller side (6lbs, 11oz) and he has always been 50th percentile or less.

At almost 22 months, he weighs 25lbs (he is tall though) and he still wears 12-18 month pants.

I think its great, you get more use out of the clothesChat Icon

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

my 2 were on the smaller side DS was 6lbs 4oz and DD was 6lbs 10oz and they are still on the lighter side than most

my DS is now almost 26 months and only weighs 25lbs and my DD just went this week and weighs 14lbs at 4 months ..

they all catch up eventually and you may just have petite babies ...Chat Icon

remember you also had twins so it may take them a little longer to gain but as long as your ped is comfortable withtheir growth and they are growing then im sure all is well

and like the OP said you definatly get alot more use from all the cute clothes Chat Icon

DS was way small - less than 3 lbs. At 15 months he is 22 lbs. I don't think he is small for his age b/c he is tall (30 inches) but he is in the 10th or 15 th percentile for weight. By one year he was on the chart for his actual age.

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

DS was 5lbs....I would say he was only really a peanut for the first couple months, now he is 12 months and is 21.5lbs.....they catch up quickly. I remember though when he was 1 month old, he still looked like a brand new born. Chat Icon

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

i think that by 6 months old or even sooner they should be on their rightful growth curve.

i had a pretty small baby (6lbs,9oz), and while he jumped a few lines on the growth curve, he still remains a small child (50% weight, 25% height). but i think he's just meant to be small - my DH was the same.

but other babies i know who were born small quickly became very big, it all depends on genetics, i guess...

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

DD was 4 pounds, 14 ozs at birth, 17 inches long.

She is still a peanut - she was a preemie, but was almost 5 pounds so she was a pretty big preemie.

If you compare her to another kid her age, she is small. But her ped is happy with her growth, she is 17 months and is just over 21 pounds, and is about 29 inches.

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

Dylan is still small but he recently made a huge jump. The doctor will start tracking a growth curve and as long as they continue to progress on their own curve, they're in good shape. He slipped from his growth curve once but he has more than made up for that. He was 4lb12oz at birth.

See now, Erin was born at a good weight, 7lbs 13oz... which I think was 50th percentile... NOW she is in the 5th or 10th percentile and she is 18 months and weighs only 20 lbs. So I guess everyone is different! Chat Icon

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

If this makes you feel any better.....

My mom was 1lb-8oz at birth - no joke....(and that was in 1942)-

And just because the story of her birth never ceases to amaze me, they did not think she was going to survive , my grandfather was over-seas in the military and my grandma was at the hosp. alone ( and under full sedation) ...because they were Catholic, they called in a priest to baptise her before she passed away ( which of-course she didnt) and needed to name her in order to baptise her...She was named after the delivering nurse ( Caroline)....Consequently my mom beat all odds and turned out just fine ( had to sleep in a dresser drawer because she fit between the crib barsChat Icon
My grandma re-named her , the name she had picked ( I have the original birth certificate bearing the name of the nurse)...

Dont know what that story has to do with anything Chat Icon - but anyhow, my mom , although only 4 foot 11 in adulthood , was always just fine for her age while growing up...Your little cutie-pies will catch up before you know it Chat Icon Chat Icon !!!

Re: If you had a small baby at birth?

My DS was a preemie and weighed 4 lbs. 11 oz at birth. He just went for his 5 month appointment this week and weight in at 13 lb.s 3 oz. The ped. is satisfied with his weight gain, and eventually I am sure he will be a big strapping boy.
