If you have a child who has graduated, or will be soon
What are your child's plans after high school? My son wouldn't do well in college, so that's not an option for him. His independence level just isn't there, and honestly we really only see him in supported employment in the future.
I was briefly looking into various programs offered through BOCES, but it just came to my attention yesterday that all of these programs are mainstream programs. Not programs for special needs. Which is beyond confusing to me, because he is in a half day Special education Tech Ed program through BOCES that is only for those with special needs. So how do they not offer something beyond that? Or am I missing something? We are still working on approval for OPWDD, but I'm not clear on what kind of vocational programs they offer either. If anyone is at this point, can you please share your experience, and what your child's plans are? My son is a junior this year, so we have a little bit of time, but not that much! Thanks

I am not there yet (my son is only 3.5) but I wanted to ask, are you on Facebook? If so there are a few groups you can join and ask this question and I'm sure you'll get more responses. Look for: Our Special Long Island Kids, & Long Island Special Education Parent Network

Hi I am not near graduation yet but you need to contact Adult Career and Continuing Education (ACCES) Formerly VESID www.vesid.nysed.gov. They are excellent and help with anything you want to do. I thought you were in the same school district as me, have you talked to the Transition Coordinator at the High School?

This is who is helping my brother find a job. He went to Briarcliffe (which is closing) for his B.A. in Graphic Design. This was a kid they said would not make it past 2nd grade in a regular ed classroom. He's in his 20's now.

We are in a neighboring district. We will be doing the ACCES stuff next year in 12th when he has his transition planning meeting. At least that's my understanding! But I'm just curious how things work

You should actually be having your transition meeting in 11th to get ready for 12th to make sure that his graduation requirements are being met or his CDOS credentials are being properly documented. We actually start our transition meetings by 9th grade. On my website www.threevillagesepta.com there is a transition tab that has a listing of a bunch of organizations to contact to get direction from. Good luck. It's a big transition!!

We just had a CSE meeting for next year and all his graduation requirements are being met. Beyond high school was not discussed, other than a post graduate form being completed with his thoughts of what he wanted to do after high school, or something to that effect. There were some other things done in previous years, I don't recall the exact documents, level 3 planning or something like that? I'm just confused where people go if BOCES is ONLY mainstream.

Most of my special ed students find jobs through ACCES as a PP mentioned.

Not sure if yours does, but my district holds these yearly "expos" for special needs parents whose children are approaching graduation. They have different companies and schools (and even classes) to discuss the transition to college or work. While my son is not there yet, I get the mailings every year for it. Perhaps you can call and see if your district does something similar?
