If you have a party for about 20 people

How much beer and wine should you have?

ETA: it's not a NYE party, not that it makes a difference.

Re: If you have a party for about 20 people

my friends and i are fairly big drinkers so this is what i am going by:

i would get about 2 bottles each of the regular stuff - vodka, rum, tequila - and about 1 bottle of any "specialty" stuff - flavored vodka, gin, malibu, kahlua, anything that's not quite as popular as the basics. i would get the big bottles (1.5L) of wine, about 4 each of white and red, and depending on if the guys at the party prefer beer over the wine and liquor, i would estimate about 4 bottles/cans of beer each. if you run out they can s*ck it up and do some shots. don't forget to get plenty of soda and juice as mixers - those seem to run out quickly!!

ETA: if you are JUST doing wine and beer, then i would get three cases of beer and the same amount of wine as stated above. extra beer is never a bad thing. Chat Icon

I would 2 36 packs of beer - this way people who drink more than 2 can have extras. You can always have extra for a future party.

As for wine - I've hosted that size party and gotten away with 3-4 bottles of wine without any problems.

I would get 3-4 cases of beer. if you get Barefoot wine, they sell them in magnums for only $9! I would get 3 of those instead of reg bottles.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Is that a good wine? I have no idea of what wine to get for the party. What do people expect? A few varieties of red and white or just a red and just a white?

I usually keep a chardonnay available - it's a good before dinner wine. Then I keep a soft red (like the australian wine - forgot the name of it, but it's like $15/bottle) on tabs for those who want it with dinner.

I haven't tried anything other than the Barefoot Pinot Grigio, it's very good!

Here is where cheap-O Jeannie comes out.

If I am having a party and providing the eats for 20 people, I will normally skimp on the alcohol. I buy 3-4 12 packs of beer - domestic. I will also buy 2-3 big bottles of wine, 2-3 big bottles of red and 2-3 big bottles of Rose or Zin.

I buy sodas and juices - and I usually have some mixers on hand - but I do not buy extra hard liquor. Everyone knows that if they want something special they should bring it themselves. The exception is when I know some people are doing Atkins - then I might provide a big bottle of Vodka.

Parties are expensive.

Re: If you have a party for about 20 people

I'd get four cases of beer and probably six bottles of wine (three white, three red). I'd rather have extra than skimp, but I love hosting things and would be embarrassed if we did not provide enough. When the alcohol dies, the party dies. Or maybe we're just a bunch of alcoholics.

I bottle of grey goose, 4 bottles of wine, 3 cases of beer. I would expect that some guests would bring a bottle or a case of something.
