No flames either way, I am just curious! A bunch of my (SAH)mom friends have already signed up for summer camp--I never even thought about it. Do most kids do summer camp too? I don't plan on it, but I didn't know what the norm was.

yes. I never thought I would do that but I do because I tried it to give myself a break and my boys loved it!!!! I don't do it full time when they are young just to give them something to do a few days a week.

My older son went to Wee Friends in Merrick in preschool - first year 2 days and the 2nd year 3 days from 10-2pm.

My younger son I tried last summer - he was just turning 3 and I put him in from 930-1230 - 2 days but he begged to go 5 days so I would up moving him to 3 days. He went to Merrick Community. I already signed up for next summer but didn't set a schedule. Probably do 3 days again.

DS went to a summer program 2 days a week last summer. He is going to go 5 days a week to a 1/2 day program this summer. He will be 4 in August. Most of his friends will go to a full day camp program, but since his birthday is later in the year he misses the cut off for a lot of the local camp programs. I plan to take DD to swim, gymboree and to music class for the summer. She will be almost 2.

I'm a SAHM, and my DS did go to a camp program at his preschool last summer (he was 4). It ran for 5 weeks, for 4 hours a day, and I have to say it was pretty reasonable. Being a SAHM, I wouldn't have forked over big $$ for full-day camp, or camp that ran the entire summer. My DS loved it, they did all sorts of fun things!!! He'll be doing it again this year after pre-K ends.

Hmm...maybe I will look into it, my DS loves school and perhaps if I can find something reasonable and part time

My DD went last year - I think I will sign her up again but not 100% sure. She went to the one at her preschool - it was 2 mornings a week for 3 hours. She LOVED it. They did arts and crafts, playground time with water activities, story time, music, etc. It was convenient b.c her school is next door to our local pool so I could drop her off and walk next door with DD#2 for some alone time with her.

I don't think I would do a full camp program - but DD loved the place she went to and it was very reasonably priced.

My son went two half days last summer. He's an only child and really wants and needs to socialize with other kids. We did it for 5 weeks.

yes and I personally think it's a great idea. Keeps them within a certain structure so that they are not bombarded when returning to school or even starting K-...

Re: If you have a preschooler, do they go to summer camp?

DD did "summer camp" at her preschool the past 2 summers. It was only 2 weeks long, 4 days a weeek for 2.5 hrs a day. That was enough. Just a little something to keep her occupied. I dont think shes doing it this summer though. Gonna enjoy her as much as possible as she will be going to kindegarten in Sept.

Re: If you have a preschooler, do they go to summer camp?

yes, Ava did three half days at gymnastics camp last summer and LOVED it. This summer she will probably do two full days a week. I like her to be home with us for the other days, but camp is so much fun for her, so I wouldn't even think to not send her!

Thus far, DS has been going to a camp at the JCC where he has been going to school. This summer, he is going to a traditional day camp that is associated with the JCC (on a bus)

#1 went to a town half day program. I don't work in the summer, but it gave me a chance to do things with #2.

This year #2 will be going to half day and #1 is going to extended day 8:30-2:30

Our town camps are really well run and very affordable.
