If you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance

, esp if you have been prescribed medicine for it

what did your lab tests say that made them make this diagnosis?

I got my test results back and I am just not sure that they give a clear indication of insulin resistance..I'm thinking of getting a 2nd opinion, but I was wondering what factors have led other people to be diagnosed in general.

Thanks

I believe that it has to do with the sugar fluctuations in your blood over the number of hours you were tests.

Part of my IF issues was insulin resistance.

They put me on Metformin.

Re: If you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance

this is a whole new world to me, as I have been diagnosed with diabetes in december, and re-confirmed with an endocronologist in March.

There should only be 1 insulin level. They may have run the 3 month test, which is a simple blood test which will give an average of your blood glucose levels within 3 months. This is called A1C.

Normal range is below 120. "normal" A1C is about 6.5-7.

Feel free to FM me if yuo need too, I have a lot of info on this lately. ALso, if you are not totally comfortable, check out diabetesforums.com

It is such a helpful site to check out.

I was on metformin too for a few months,a nd my endo wanted me to go on insulin injections because we would like to TTC soon.

Re: If you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance

I did the 3 hours glucose tolerance test, so there were 4insulin levels. All were well within normal range except for the 3 hours, which was high.

My a1c was 5.2, so well below the warning range.

I'm just not sure what all this means and I don't want to go on medication if I don't truly need it

Yeah I heard about this.

if you are insulin resistant you actually have a lot of insulin, but your body can't process it.

That should really be helpful to the type i diabetics and type 2 diabetics in more severe stages though! no more shots!

I don't see why they would put you on meds if your a1c was that low.

Yeah..the problem that led me to the test was that I get really low blood sugar and have almost passed out. The doctor felt that ahd the test extended to 4 or 5 hours my insulin would have remained high and that's when my sugar would have dropped really low.

I read that to diagnose IR, they go by your fasting insulin. Mine was on the low side of normal for fasting and one hour, in the middle of normal for 2 hours, and high for 3 hours. I don't really know what that means. My sugar was fine, so obviosuly the insulin was doing its job.

Hmmm. I wold think that more than likely they will have you make sure you eat a few small meals instead of three big ones. If you do that you should be able to keep up your sugars the entire day. It is scary when your blood sugars drop. It would happen to me a lot in the middle of the night and I would wake up and know and have to go and eat a piece of candy or have some juice.

Yeah I am so bad about that. I always forget to eat (though I definitely odn't look like it) and end up paying for it later.

Thanks ladies. i think I am going to get a second opinion.

Does anyone have an endocrinologist they recommend?

Re: If you have been diagnosed with insulin resistance

I recommend my DH's endocrinologlist. DH is a Type I diabetic. Check out the educational cartoons that his doctor puts out cartoonmd.com.

The Dr. is endocrinologist Justin Matrisciano, MD whose office is in the Stony Brook/Setauket area.
