If you have dark hair & dye, how do you give your color depth?
Do you highlight? What color?
I love a rich dark, but my hair looked 1tone flat. I now have highlights, but not sure if I love the "unnatural" look

Re: If you have dark hair & dye, how do you give your color depth?
I would be VERY interested in finding this out myself.
I am all natural since I cant maintain anything else and my hair is dark...black. I touch it up since I have gray but I still have a "FLAT" look.
I dont want to add highlights. I almost feel like making it dark that it looks blue

to get reflections and shine...you must add gold.

Re: If you have dark hair & dye, how do you give your color depth?
If you are covering grey, you should be getting highs and lows in your color if you are using good color. It only makes sense that the natural color, the white and the grey will grab color differently resulting in a color with highs and lows. Also, if you pull the color through your ends each time, you could get color build up which will make hair color flat and dull. I agree that a warmer color will look best, especially when covering grey.
BTW: I am a hairdresser

I'm naturally light haired but was raven haired for years.
I used to get highlights in chocolate brown and expresso or if I did my own box job, I would put in a glaze and that would give my hair depth

I'm struggling with this myself. I colored my hair at home for a few years and it just got to a point where the color was looking dull. I went back to my salon and got highlights. Went back 2.5 months later to get them again and told her that I didn't want them to be so drastic..like you said "unnatural" She added a bronze color to even it out more but its still very bold. I just did it last week so once I see how it grows, I'll figure out what to do next time. It's going to be a gradual process to get to that more natural look it seems.

Re: If you have dark hair & dye, how do you give your color depth?
I do highlights once a year and then dye my entire head on top of that. As I do my haircolor throughout the year, the highlights will still show through slightly, giving the impression of different tones/depth/etc.
I haven't had highlights since last year and now my color is looking blah since my highlights start so far down. I'm planning on doing highlights again before I dye my hair this month.
