If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?I would especially like to know the info if someone is home all day and you use the heat sometimes during the day. Please also tell me if you have OIL to heat your hot water as well. Also what temp do you leave it at day and night?
I think we are burning through oil extremely fast! It's hard too b/c it's so cold and we are home alot as we have both been sick.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
We don't have oil heat, we have gas, but a colleague told me last week that he & his wife are paying $400 every 10-12 days for oil to keep their home at 72 degrees! His wife works varying shifts, so they maintain that temp all day/night. To me, that sounds excessive, but I'm a Pt WAHM, we keep our temp at 69 during the day and drop it to 67 when we are sleeping.

I don't know for sure but usually we get 4-5 drops per year. My house is always around 65, and we have steam heat.

Did you mean 10-12 weeks? That is about what we spend on our oil heat. We just got a delivery last week for $469. We keep the heat on 70-71 during the day and 68-69 at night. I am home during the days with two little ones.

We're on a budget plan. We pay 214 a month for 10 months. We budgeted I believe 1200 gallons for the year. We usually keep the heat at 70 during the day and 68 at night. We have a 3 bedroom 2 bath split...this is the old house

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
its friggin expensive. we have separate thermostats on each floor. i am a WAHM.
top floor, i keep at 65 at night. DD has a portable heater in her room. I move to 70 when i wake up. Goes back down to 65 when DD goes to bed, around 6:30.
bottom floor is programmed. at night its at 55. goes to 70 at 9am. begins to lower around 6:30pm.
i feel like the oil guy is always here. and yes, the oil heats our hot water as well.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
We are home alot and the oil heats the house and the hot water. The heat is on 68-70 during the day and 66 at night. We are on a budget plan and it seems to work out. I remember the first time filling up, I was floored by the price. But it doesnt seem so bad when you pay less each month even in the summer. I would talk to your oil company and even shop around for better prices.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
5 rooms/2 bedroom house = 1055sq ft; hot water is heated by oil. filled 9/30: $471.79 filled 12/17: $409.21 100 gallons 1/29: $349.90
In 16wks we've had the oil delivered 3x = $1230.90. I didn't fill it today because it's $3.49/gallon which is outrageous (hoping that comes down). I'll definitely have to fill it one more time possibly 2x before the spring.
We were having a problem with our hot water during the winter because it wouldn't come on unless the heat was up high (basically we'd have to turn the heat up to degrees for the hot water to kick on...then we'd turn it back down after our shower). The oil man turned the water temp to 105 degrees...not really sure what that means but our hot water works now.
I work but my MIL watches my children at my house. Our temperature is usually 69-71 degrees in the house. At night we turn it up to 73 only because in the kids room the radiator doesn't work well so their room gets cold. I turn the heat up so it will make it's way to their room.
Hope this helps.

To be honest I dont know the exact amount BUT ALOT! Seems like so much mor than normal too this winter!
We just had our tank filled up last week and its already more than 1/2 empty
Even tho I am a part time SAHM my mom watches my DD at my hpouse so the heat is on. We leave it set at 69 at nite.
ETA: we are on a budget plan too and pay 300 a month for 12 months and alwats owe 200-300 at end of year

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
Ok...so it's not just me,
We are new to this house and new to oil heat. This is def a "cold house", insulation could be better, alot of drafts (will try to work on those in time, mostly insulation issues).
We just got an oil delivery on Jan 11, had a full tank pretty much and are down to half a tank already (275 tank). We had a delivery before xmas and then Jan 11, and now at this rate seems we will need one next week!
I keep the heat at 72 at night otherwise the bedrooms would be freezing. During the day I keep it at about 70, again, we would feel cold at too much lower than 69.
I was just curious what others were experiencing b/c the amt of delivieries we are getting is insane!

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
I got oil on 12/30 (fill up 275 gallon tank). I still have 1/2 a tank left. We have a cape house with a finished basement. Each floor has it own zone. I keep the heat at 60 in the basement always, between the burner being down there and running the dryer the temp stays about 64 most of the time. During the day 9am - 5pm I keep both levels at 63. At 5pm I up the heat to 70 and lowers back down to 63 at 9pm. Some days during the day I will bring it up to 65/66 because I am cold. I am a SAHM and home all day most days. We don't have oil hot water.
Averaging about 5 to 6 gallons a day.

4.1 gallons here. All I did was take my last oil delivery in gallons and divide by 30 days.

about 1000 gallons a year.
Before we re-insulated and fixed windows and got a new door we used 3000 gals...get your house together and it will save you a ton.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
we are new to this house and oil, OMG I'm about to have a heart attack! we filled up 3 weeks ago , and the truck came today w/ another 134 gallons. so that is 6.5 gallons a day in the past 3 weeks?? this doesn't sound right I'm pi$$ed, I hate oil, but there are no gas lines here
oh during the day we keep heat at 67 and at night btwn 68-69. we have a split level 3 bedroom. burner is old. i"m home all day w/ kids other wise I would turn the heat down during the day . how can we know that the trucks are not rigged?! we have top of the line andersons and the house is not drafty at all.

Maybe it's because your burner is old but it seems right to me. We keep our heat during the day at 60 till 430 then it goes to 65, once we get home around 530 I turn to 70. (downstairs) Upstairs is a different zone and we keep that at 60 all day and then once we get home (530) we turn to 70 and when we go to bed back to 60.

yeah I think you are right. we only have one zone so that compounds the problem. everyone I know has gas and they are paying so much less than we are , I'm becoming very bitter

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
I keep my heat at 62 degrees during the day (nobody is home) and then have it programmed to heat up to 69 degrees bewteen 6-9p...then back down to 62.
It's chilly in the house, but once we're under the covers, it's fine.
Weekends I keep it around 69/70 all day.
We're burning through oil pretty fast...thank goodness we locked in at $2.64 back in Sept, but those $500 oil bills still sting.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
I got a delivery on 12/5 that was 150ish gallons. I got another delivery yesterday that was 163 gallons.
I am home all day with 3 kids. We have a split and only 1 thermostat. During the day the heat is on 67-68. At night it is 65. If we are going to be out for the day I put it down to 60. We also use oil for hot water.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
I think we go through about 5 gallons a day. Someone is always home and we use oil for hot water. We keep the heat at 66 during the day and 64 at night although last night it was so cold I set it to 65.
We got a delivery 12/23 and we have 1/2 the tank left. We also have all new windows and the attic is insulated really well.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
We usually get 3 deliveries a year - at 200 gallons each - so i guess 600 gallons a year or 1.64 gallons per day
We both work and the therm goes down to 60 when we're not home - its set for 67 when we are home and it does down to 62 at night.
And yes it heats our hot water also

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
about 3 gallons per day in the winter. but we aren't home all day, so i keep it at 62. it goes up to 67 for an hour in the morning while we are getting ready for work and between 6-930 at night. when we go to bed, it's back to 62. on the weekends it's set to 64.

Re: If you have OIL HEAT, how much oil do you think you are going through a day?
its hard to say but according to my calculations with what we have ordered so far its between 2-3 gallons a day
for a 1 story 2 bed home
we keep the stat at 58 when we are sleeping and not home, and keep around 60 when we are home so it's not like we are warm and toasty.
We have a fireplace-still trying to figure out if it hurts or helps....
