If you keep a monthly budget...
How much do you allot for gifts? Some months nothing is happening - some there's something every weekend. $200-$300? Too much? Too little?

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
this is how i do it:
estimate how much you need for the whole year. holidays+birthdays+a little more for unexpected events. then i divide that by 12.
if i don't need it this month, i just leave it be until i need it.
hope that helps

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
i save about $20 a paycheck for the entire year (twice a month) it covers mostly everything. I sometimes dump a bit more come xmass time but that is only if i have extra money elsewhere

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
We actually don't have anything down on our budget for gifts - I was thinking of doing something to save for Christmas gifts since we tend to have a lot of expenses then and no specific savings for it.
I think it would be a good idea to put aside a set amount per paycheck for Christmas and bday/etc gifts. Hmmm.

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
I never thought about adding it- just not sure how I would- things seem to spring up and the costs can vary depending on the event and our relationship to the person

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
We add in the gift depending on the occasion not on an monthly accumulation basis. When the holidays come we start putting money aside earlier. Let's say this month we have a wedding, we will include the wedding gift in the budget for this month. Last month no events- that money goes into savings. (I also break the monthly budget into weekly budgets. It may seem a little OCD but it works GREAT)

Re: If you keep a monthly budget...
I don't have a separate category for gifts in our budget. Each week I take $20 out of my weekly "allowance" and put that aside for Christmas so we don't feel a big hit come the holidays.
