If you see a stray dog...

What do you do? My DH always laughs at me because I will do anything to rescue an animal. In the past month I have rescued 2 dogs (in the same day!) when they escaped from their yards. Yesterday I saw a German Shepherd loose on a busy street and I called the police to go get him. Luckily the police station is right down the street. And I just put an extra leash in my car in case I ever need to leash one.

I feel like it's my duty!! Chat Icon

So do I. But I rarely see one. I have rescued a lot of stray cats.

I do the same thing. I rather take some time out of my day then have them get hurt because they got out by accident.

You may also want to keep some old towels in your truck. When I used to bartend, I found quite a few animals that had been hit by a car and needed to be brought to the emergency vet. Having the towels helped protect me and them.

Re: If you see a stray dog...

I would try to help the dog. One time there was a YOUNG golden in the millde of the road on 25...he just kept running back and forth on the busy street. I was with my EX MIL in my EX FIL's new camero(SP?) I made her stop and get the dog. He was sooooo cute, but x-FIL was sooo ANGRY that I put the dog in his car.

Then to top it off, we brought him home, but then to the shelter the next day (NO TAGS), and we would have taken him if noone claimed him. 2 days later someone claims him. Calls us...not to thank us for saving their dog from a certain bad predicament, but to yell at us, for bringing him to the shelter, because he had to pay fees to get the dog out.

JERK OFF!!!

I would have been so happy, if someone could have helped my Gunther. He was only nine months old, and the Leash BROKE!!!! on a busy street, he got spooked, ran from my husband, wound up in traffic and killed instantly (one of the worst days of my life) If only I could have paid a couple of fees to have my baby back.......

lulugrrl that's terrible! Chat Icon Chat Icon

The police are so sick of me calling. Lately I've been reporting a lot of hurt racoons on the side of the road.

I've picked up many a hurt/lost animals including hawks, ducks, and dogs. Usually along SS or Sunrise.

Sad thing about the wild ones is that if you can catch it is usually to late.

Lulugrrl - I am so sorry for your Gunther, it's my worst fear.
I am pathetic when it comes to that. I've been late to work a few times cuz I saw a stray and had to pick it up.
One time, I found a dog on Sunrise Hwy in Islip at night - snuck him home to my apt. in Babylon and called the number on his collar (it was a California number and address) - the next morning his owner called me and the guy was so thrilled I called his CA number. Apparently he had lived with his parents there and moved here for a job and hadn't changed the dog's tags yet. He was in tears when he came to get his dog.

I almost always pull over & try to get them back to their owners. I have called the police on some occasions, and I have been late for work numerous times.
If Rudy ever got lost I would hope someone would do the same for me!Chat Icon

Oh my Goodness, that is so great. You know you try to keep the animals with you, but sometimes they are just so sneaky and get out, they have NO CLUE of the dangers...so sweet of you to rescue this one!!!!Chat Icon

Re: If you see a stray dog...

I recently took a dog home with me that was running in the middle of the street. I took pictures of her, hung them all over my neighborhood and the neighboring towns with my phone number, and nobody ever called. I wound up bringing her to the shelter bc I figured whoever was looking for her would probably check there and she wound up biting my DH and intimidating my dogs, but I told the guy at the shelter if nobody claimed her in 2 weeks I wanted her back. I called to check in a week later and the family had come to the shelter to pick her up. Happy Ending I suppose....if the dog liked her family. Chat Icon
