what did you do about gifts? Did you write "No gifts please" on the invite?

DD doesn't really need anything (well, besides food and shelter- but we already provide that for her Chat Icon ) and DH and i don't really want to have a million toys in the house... but, i don't want to take that away from her either (if that makes any sense).

Anyway, if you invited alot of people- what was the gift situation like?

It was OUT OF CONTROL. For real. 115 adults = an obscene amount of toys.

There really isn't much you can do about it though. People love giving gifts to little kids! Chat Icon

that's what we're dreading. We're torn about putting "no gifts please" on the invite though. I figure, if we do, some people will still get gifts b/c they cant help but get one lol but, for some reason, i feel like it might be rude in some way to put it. I dont know. Chat Icon

we got very little to no toys...it was mostly cash, bonds, gift cards, and clothes! I was very happy and appreciative of that! This was for both kids!

We've had approx. around 65 people for our birthday parties and mostly got clothes and money for our little ones. Money of course was put away for them. I would personally leave it and donate whatever clothes or toys to good will, childrens hospitals, orphanges or family service leagues. I understand the I don't want to take away from her either, that would be running through my mind. I'm sure it would be fun for her to get new exciting toys though Chat Icon I don't give my kids all their toys at once from their birthday parties. I still have a stash of them in a few closets.

This is what I do. Not everyone gives age appropriate gifts either. I would store things in the basement and switch them out with other toys as he got bored.

On the invite - in lieu of gifts, please make a donation to..... and pick a worthy cause people would like to support! Like a children's cancer hospital....

We had about 80 people and children we did except gifts but I did also ask every guest to bring a book for DS and write a little note inside for him. We now have quite the book collection!

Most of the guests who came to my DS's b-day gave him cash & savings bond gifts.

My aunt always tells us not to give her daughter too many toys (they have a HOUSE FULL), so we get clothes, like for the next season or even the next year. When she does get toys, she puts some away to give throughout the year and even exchanges some for toys that she can use when she's a bit older or returns them for store credit- so she can get her dd things she'll need later on

We had like 65 adults and a bunch of kids -- the gift scenario wasn't too crazy -- she got mostly money and bonds and clothes. She did get some toys, but they were mostly all toys that we wanted anyway! Chat Icon

i didn't because I honestly didn't even think of it... but I wish I did. It was obscene the amount of stuff we got... I had no idea we'd get so much stuff.

Re: If you threw a big (60-100+ people) 1st birthday party for DC

This is exactly my question too! Personally, I'd rather people just come and enjoy the day and not bother with gifts, but I know it's inevitable so I hope to curb the toys/clothes. I decided that if people ask, I'm going to tell them he doesn't need any toys or clothes (in hopes they give cash for his college fund instead) but will def. try to exchange/donate whatever we don't need. I'm insisting that friends do NOT give gifts - I want them to spoil their own children instead. :)

Lucas got a ton...more than we knew what to do with so we had to store some away and give them to him over time as other things were put away.

I would through word of mouth say you would like clothes. I think people may get upset if they can't buy a gift especially for a 1st birthday and would probably bring one anyway. Then the people who followed by your wishes will feel terrible they didn't bring a gift. KWIM

I was surprised about how many people gave DD clothes in a size she would eventually grow into, so that was a real plus. We did get a lot of toys, but DD loved it.

We asked for books to build Cole's library with. We gave each person a letter so that we didn't get doubles and a bookplate to write a little something in.

Re: If you threw a big (60-100+ people) 1st birthday party for DC

To be totally honest I would probably roll my eyes at a "no gifts" clause in an invite. Lol, I don't mean to sound like a jerk- I'm just telling the truth. Whatever you get you get and most people give a gift receipt anyway so you can return what you don't want/need.

We got a lot of clothes mostly for Noahs. I would just grin and bear it. People like to buy gifts. Liek others said, they will grow into some of the toys/clothes.
