If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
DH and I are celebrating our tenth year in Oct, and Rachel Ray wants us to come to her show. The audience will be filled with couples also celebrating their anniversary. The only catch...it's the first day back for my students.??
I already said no, but some people are saying that it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thoughts....

I don't think of being a guest on the Rachel Ray show as a once in a lifetime thing.
Considering there was a teacher on here who was afraid to miss a day for her BIL's wedding, I'd say you probably made the right choice (even though I think it's CRAZY that the teaching profession has become so stressful and cutthroat).

I say go Lol #dedicated
All kidding aside though, missing the first day is rough for the kids sake and their parents. I really do think you made the right choice

i would tend to think you made the right decision by saying no. I am thinking of it from a parents standpoint though...you send your kids to the first day of school and they have a substitute although I guess it depends on the grade/subject you teach.

YES. I would take the day off as long as it does not affect you professionally.

Re: If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
If I had tenure/job security and had been teaching a long time, sure.
If not, hellllll no.
The first day is usually a waste anyway -- I mean, not a WASTE but KWIM? You just get people's names, seating, kind of go over some basic stuff -- before you know it, after an intro, the bell is ringing. IDK, my sister has been teaching 14 years and since she has been teaching that long -- if she reeeeeally didn't want to miss something then she would do it.
To me, going on RR wouldn't matter at all - like, I wouldn't care about that but the one thing that did cross my mind was her giving you guys a giveaway / gift like a trip or something!

I wouldn't do it. Its a TV show, not a lifetime thing. Plus, it would look bad in front of bosses/co-workers.

I'm a teacher, I'd be cranky about it maybe lol but I'd say no. Can't imagine missing the first day.

Re: If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
Since she's celebrating 10 years on the air, I'm assuming there will be some sort of giveaway. I teach First Grade and I don't want my kiddies to be confused on the first day. I'm also not tenured and we have a new principal this year.
On the other hand people are saying that it's only the first day, and what if I miss out on a huge giveaway like a trip.

Since you said you aren't tenured, I would absolutely not go.
Yes, we could say, "What if you miss a big trip?" However, we could also say, "What if you lose your job?"
I personally wouldn't miss the first day of school for that. I would only miss the first day in the event of a true emergency.

I absolutely would not. I think it sends the wrong message to the students AND the parents that you don't take your job very seriously to be a no show for the first day.

I would absolutely not miss the first day of school to go on a talk show.
I would not consider it even if you had tenure but especially since you do not have tenure and have a new principal. What kind of impression does that make on the new principal.

Re: If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
I would have to agree only because I think the first day back at school is SO important for the kids. They are all a little nervous after being away all summer...so its a big deal for them and you are going to be their teacher for the year so you should be there to welcome them - sorry :( I was going to enter this competition too but once I learned it was going to be on the first day back to school I decided not to. Happy Anniversary!

Oh shoot yeah I didn't see that you are NOT tenured.
Until you have tenure, you go to school if you are DEAD. Like, that's just how it is... my sister, and I have mentioned this before, missed my maternal grandmother's day wake and funeral because it was her first year teaching and she didn't have tenure.

If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
My dd is about to start 1st grade and I would (as a parent) be really upset if the her teacher was not there and she had a sub. My dd is all nervous and excited about meeting her new teacher - I think she would be really bummed too. Sorry! Its a tough age too bc you as the teacher is SO important on their first day. If you taught high school, i would probably say it wouldn't be so bad.

No, I wouldn't even consider missing the first day of school as a teacher. Back when I was teaching if I missed the first day of school there would be h-e-l-l to pay, my principal would've flipped out.

No, I would not miss the first day of school.
This is coming from someone who waited six weeks to take a weekend away with DH for our 10th anniversary earlier this year.
