The taping or even being on a tv show is just not as important as the first day of school for a teacher. I'm sorry, I think going to something like that shows what your priorities are and your school would fire you. I would not even go to it if I was tenured with twenty year under the belt.

As a parent I would never respect you if you missed the first day of school as a first grade teacher to go to a talk show. I have kids right around that age. The first day of school is huge for them!
If you are really that concerned I would send your husband with your mother.

Oh god no. That's ridiculous imo. For any job, not just teaching.

Its interesting to see all these responses. I don't have kids and just don't get why parents cry on the first day of Kindergarten or First grade. I don't get some other things, but CLEARLY you have to be a parent to "get it".
(Yes, I get that they are growing up, its the first, etc. I GET that)
And CLEARLY I don't get how politics work in schools.
In my job, if I take off for a personal day its personal. Does not matter if I want ti pick my nose ALL day, have surgery, go to a wedding, or yes, be on TV. Its no one business. I just request the day off. CLEARLY, when you work in a school, it makes no difference. Even though you have personal days you are just not allowed to take them. Then why do you have personal days?
Seems to me our school system is flucking screwed up when its not ok to take a day off.
And yes, I get its the first day of school and the kids are nervous. Seems to me they would adjust, no?
I want to be clear. I mean absolutely no disrespect and I'm telling my side, the side that has no kids (and hence cant understand why its SUCH a big deal she take off the first day of school) Its more of a comment on the screwed up schools that you cant even take a day off from work.
I don't want to come off as blase about the parents and kids feelings. I'm not.
My vote, still, is to take the day off if it will not hurt your career (as I stated before in this thread)
ETA: I think she is going to be ON the show, not in the audience. That's my interpretation.

I'm a co teacher in a private school, if I didn't show up on the first day, I'd be fired, I would never miss the first day, not for a talk show, that's for sure.

I am an educator and no way in hell would I miss the first day for this, my husband is taking my son to his first day of prek bc if I did it would make me late for work which IMO is unacceptable on the first day. There are a lot of perks as an educator, I get a lot of time off with my children and I am grateful for that on the same token I have to miss things like first day of school drop off.

Nope, no way. Taking off the first day of school to see Rachel Ray is not ok imo. If your child was having surgery or you broke your leg, it's different and the administration and parents would understand. It's unfortunate, but I think it would be a bad decision to not be there the first day for that.

Re: If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
I thank everyone for their honest opinions. I did not hesitate when I found out it was the first day of school. I said no because I could never imagine missing the first day. It never crossed my mind. I thought I would ask just to see what everyone else thought. I have my priorities in order .
In reading all of these responses I'm shocked. As a teacher, I've had to miss my DD's first day of school and I understand that it comes with the territory. With that being said, I don't think I would lose respect for a teacher that I don't even know because she took the first day off. People have missed births and funerals for work and I'm sorry but I don't get it. Life is about moments. Students probably won't remember if you missed the first day. They will however remember when they incubated duck eggs, and saw them hatch. They will remember becoming penguin experts and visiting the Central Park Zoo to see the penguins. You will never forget that you missed that important moment. As for the parents who will be annoyed or lose respect for you, you will have the rest of the year to prove what an amazing kick ass teacher you are. Important moments are not to be missed. Life is about making memories and living those important moments with no regrets. I don't suggest missing work for a tv show, but those other ones, you bet! You will not be denied tenure because you missed your first day of school for a funeral or wedding or the birth of your child. If that happens, then boy are we in trouble as a society. Thanks for reading this long post. I appreciated everyone's input.??

Weddings, funerals, the birth of a child, etc are all VERY different from attending the taping of a talk show. I would not lose respect for a teacher that took off for any of the things you just mentioned, but a talk show, as you said yourself is something you immediately declined because you have your priorities in check. Any other day of the year I wouldn't care what the reason is but to take off the first day of school I think it has to be for something more important than a talk show.

But in your job, aren't there are days where you can't take off? A scheduled meeting, new client visiting, important customer interaction, etc.?
I don't think it so much that it's a personal day just that it's on the first day of school where you're expected to make a first impression on the students. Can you imagine if you made an appointment with a lawyer and they weren't there for the meeting because they went on a talk show? Or if you were meeting with a new client at work and decided not to come in to go to the zoo? I'm sure that wouldn't fly.

Re: If you were a teacher, would you miss the first day of school for this?
I am a teacher and I would never miss the first day, unless it was an emergency. It is my job to greet those children the first day and ease their minds. I have missed my kids getting on the bus for kindergaten and the day if their birthday because parent teacher conferences. I would also not think very highly of a teacher if I heard they did not come to school the first day because they could see a talk show or get prizes.
