If you were looking for a therapist...

would you look for specifically a psychologist? or would you open your insurance book and choose either a Psychologist or a social worker?
Myself (SW) and a psychologist were debating this this morning and I want to hear the results.

Since I am a psychologist, I would probably look for a psychologist. Nothing against Social Workers at all (they are amongst my closest friends!), but it is a professional bias.

I went to a social worker for three years and she was amazing. I'd find a person you are most comfortable withChat Icon

I have a good friend who is a therapist - he knows me well so I asked him for a reference, for someone he believed I would mesh well with. He referred me to a social worker, and I just love her Chat Icon

I tend to agree with you on that. That was part of our discussion being more loyal to what we specifically do. I appreciate honesty!Chat Icon

Re: If you were looking for a therapist...

I had a negative experience with a CSW so I, personally, would look for a psychologist (which I did and I loved him!)

I see a wonderful CSW. I love her and we have an excellent rapport.

You just have to feel comfortable with the person.

I feel bad responding this but personally I would look for a psychologist or a psychiatrist. I think it depends though, on what you need therapy for. For me, who has issues with anxiety I tend to be more inclined towards going to someone who seems more "medical" whereas maybe if it was for marriage counseling I would be more inclined to go to a SW. Maybe i am not making any sense..Chat Icon

Please dont feel bad. I am looking for honest opinions not opinions to make me happy. I actually agree with what you are saying. Are conversation is really how psychology originated, SWers took over many of their cases and now mental health counselors are exceeding both.

I would have to say that this may be because of cost issues. I know in my insurance book- most of the mental health professionals listed are SWs or MHCs. There are only a few psychologists.

I pay out of pocket for my psychologist (luckily, I only go on an as needed basis).
