If you were not getting/debating the swine flu shot for DC, have you changed your mind?

Just wondering how many people have stayed firm in their decision to not get the swine flu shot or if anyone has changed their mind/decided on yes if on the fence.

Just curious. I still go back and forth re the swine flu, still saying no to the seasonal.

Still a FIRM NO, to both in this house.

I was leaning towards no until my 4 nieces and nephews (youngest is 2) got H1NI a week after spending the weekend at our house (so far so good at our house though). My SIL (who had also been leaning towards not getting it) said it was so hard to see them that sick and said she wished she had gotten them the shot.

You knew that didn't you?Chat Icon

That being said, I think its suc-ks that folks can't FIND the vaccination. I dont understand this 'only uninsured' thing etc.

Its messed up. If they want to give their kids the shot and vaccine is there then they should be able to get it. Seems simple to me. I thought they said they'd have millions upon millons of this stuff available. they kept saying they were well prepared etc. Now I hear Dec for the shots?

Even if i was on the fence, Id feel guilty getting a shot at this point for AJ seeing as so many who never waivered have wanted it for so long and can't seem to get it. Chat Icon

I'm not on the fence. My answer is still no.

Not for nothing but I'd practically start looking for places out of state with relatives that I could find who'd give the shot. Most county places are giving it and have LINES of people. I know in San Antonio, Mexicans are crossing the border for it and bringing in relatives. Lots of folks here are lying about insurance just in case to get it. People are driving in from all over to get a chance to stand in line for a shot.

Its getting ridiculous!

Re: If you were not getting/debating the swine flu shot for DC, have you changed your mind?

I was on the fence about the shot. Then I made the decision that once it is available for DS, he is going to get it.

I am actually 35 weeks pregnant and got the shot myself last week.

Just because I am wondering, why is it that you are on the fence about the swine flu shot and a firm no for the seasonal? I have heard most people have the complete opposite feeling as that.

If you are wondering why I got "off the fence" about the shot, here are my reasons:

From everything I have researched, the swine flu shot is made the exact same way as the seasonal flu shot, only with a different strain of flu. So I *personally* do not believe there are any higher risks in getting the swine flu shot than there are in getting the seasonal flu shot.

Last year I had a stomach virus which made me capable of doing nothing for 48 hours. I could not take care of DS. I never want to feel that way again. So if I can get the flu shots and take away some of the risk of being terribly sick... I am going to do that. And DS goes to daycare so he is around lots of germs, I want him protected as much as possible. (and I do understand that it's not 100%, but it is more than 0%)

I ended up getting it for ds and am on a list at my pcp to get it for dh and myself. I was on the fence until my ped explained how dangerous it would be for dd to get it since she is a newborn.

A few reasons. I do not want DD to get 4 flu shots, and being that the swine flu will likely be the major flu strain this year, I felt the better choice was to skip the seasonal and IF anything, get the swine flu (a big if).

There is a very good likeliness that the main flu that will go around will be H1N1, so I feel the seasonal will be a good one to skip.

And if you go on the belief that the swine is just as safe and made the same way as the seasonal, then if I had to get one, it would be the swine. The swine flu will spread faster than the seasonal, it may overtake the seasonal simply b/c of lack of immunity hence my reasons to say no the seasonal. And many years they get the seasonal wrong...so I have a 'feeling' this will be another one of them. Only time will tell but so far, h1n1 is the flu going strong. If you think about it...H1N1 is what surfaced when the seasonal flu was ending, which is what happens...by the time the flu mutates at the end of the season and that's how they develop the new vaccine for the upcoming years....so maybe it was the seasonal that mutated into the swine after all? I was on the fence for a while - but after talking to more people, doing more research and hearing some more stories we decided to go ahead and give it to DD#1 (most of her nursery school wasn't getting it now most are).

I'm still on the fence for DD#2 only because she is under 6 months so when she turns 6 months next month she will need 4 shots which I'm not crazy about. If I stagger them and IF they are available she wouldn't have immunity until almost March - so that really doesn't work. I think I will probably end up giving them to her b.c her sister has lung issues (gets spasmodic croup from allergies) and DD#2 wheezes on and off so I worry about their lungs if they get it.

BTW DD#1 did okay with the 1st shot and she had no side effects at all.

It is a hard decision - damned if you damned if you don't. I know I wouldn't forgive myself if she got the flu and ended up in the hospital or worse - but I also wouldn't forgive myself if I did give it to her and she had a severe reaction to the shot. But in the long run for us...I think the likelihood of her getting the flu was greater than getting a severe reaction.

Perfectly reasonable reasoning if you ask me! Thanks for explaining! Chat Icon

I have to tell you, though, that when I went to get it last week at my DS peds office, it was really nice to be in line surrounded by other people who were there to either get the shot themselves or for their kids. It really helped me feel as though I was making a good, informed decision.

I hope whatever you decide is the choice that makes you the most comfortable! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm still on the fence as well... actually leaning more towards NOT giving DD either flu vaccine. Like the PP said, DD wont be 6 months until next month so she wont have immunity until wayyy into the season, plus DD is not in daycare or even around too many people at this point.
It's so hard to know what the right decision is....Chat Icon

I changed my mind too. the girls already got the seasonal about a month ago and I spoke to lots of friends and family and as other's posted I just felt that it's really no different than the seasonal flu (other than it being new). So I'm going on Friday and they will get the nasal spray. I'm not sure yet what the difference is between the nasal and actual shot. I have a call into my pediatricians office. They had appts so I took the appt. If I change my mind, I can always cancel the appt. My kids are just going to love me. They hate shots

From what I understand (and I could be wrong) the nasal mist contains the live virus and the shot is the dead virus. As far as whether or not there are different side effects, I have no idea. I haven't researched the nasal mist.

Still a no for swine, but got the regular flu shot. I was iffy at one point on swine, but after speaking to my ped., who is against it, I went back to be a firm no.

Re: If you were not getting/debating the swine flu shot for DC, have you changed your mind?

oops to clarify..

No on both.

We never intended on giving her the flu shot to being with. We dont take it so she wouldnt. There's a lot that goes into that statement but its the simplest answer.

4 shots seems extreme, period.
It seems just WRONG

I dont care what they say about it being a dead virus etc or how it just can't happen. People DO get sick from those shots. Even if its just a reaction of some sort, it happens. More then they admit because I think lots of people dont connect it to the shot.

I agree with PP, damned if you do and damned if you dont.

I believe things happen for a reason. If AJ got sick and was in the hospital then nothing I could have done would have changed that. If not this, then something else would have gotten her there. I take as many precautions as I can but somethings we can not get out of. But I dont want to give her a battery of shots that would force her into that situtation either. I have control over that. Its tough and being as I have had a brother and cousins fall sick to this, with my brother being hospitalized you'd think i'd be more on the fence, but in an odd way I'm more against it now.

There is no right answer and the only choice i have is to not to give it to her and deal with being super cautious and paranoid instead of giving it to her and having a feeling of security that frankly, I dont think exists.

Re: If you were not getting/debating the swine flu shot for DC, have you changed your mind?

The pediatrician has been out of the seasonal flu shot for a while, but they just got some more in. DS will be getting round 2 this week.

I was undecided, but leaning towards no for the H1N1 shot. I'm now leaning towards yes although the pediatrician doesn't have any right now. DS is in daycare and one of the school aged kids at the daycare came down with a probable case about a week ago. Schools in our state are closing b/c hundreds of kids have flu-like symptoms. All of these things make me really nervous. We take DS everywhere so I worry about him catching it not just from daycare, but from anywhere. I plan to talk to my pediatrician about this when DS gets his seasonal flu shot.

jsut wanted to say I am in the same exact boat as you. NO to seasonal flu and i'm up in the air about swine flu.

DH says no to both.

i hate this! it's always on my mind.

i shoudl mention that DS has an egg allergy, so the ped said he can't get the seasonal flu shot and i dind't ask, but i don't think he can even get the h1n1 anyway.

but, like others have said - i'm paranoid about him getting sick. Chat Icon

I was on the fence about getting ALL of the shots for the kids. I was going to pick either the seasonal of H1N1, but we decided to get them all, since I'm pregnant, Genevieve's in school this year, and of course we got to Disney every year. I can only imagine the germs that will go around there Chat Icon

Well, a couple weeks ago I did change my mind and decided it would be best for everyone in our family to get the shot.

But can anyone get it? No. so at this point, I'm disgusted with the whole thing and wish I had given it less thought.

I was against both at first but now it is getting too scary. DD got both her seasonal and H1N1 last week and DS goes tomorrow for both.

Re: If you were not getting/debating the swine flu shot for DC, have you changed your mind?

Considering the flu vaccine has obviously WORKED in this house as the only one without the full vaccination is the one who is sick I am now convinced my girls need the H1N1. Mads will be going in tomorrow for it if my pediatrician still has it (she had it today).

Sorry- I don't EVER want to see 105.5 again. And I hate that I'm needing to give my 12 month old a medication like Tamiflu.

I am so torn, I didnt want to give dd h1n1 and my ped agreed...now she tells me she has seen many many very sick kids and recommends we get it. I dont know who to trust or even HOW to make an informed decision when all the info I read, see, hear is different.

This is how i feel. Exactly. I am sick over this, tired of analyzing it,thinking about it, etc. I just want to enjoy my DD and I find all I do is worry about this darn flu and what to do. Chat Icon Chat Icon
