What do you do?
I am thinking about going back to college. Was just wondering what was out there.

I was a grad student in a bird lab. You could be a lab technician, but that would usually also involve organizational things for the lab in addition to animal care. Things like keeping up the animal databases, etc.
Our lab used to have both a technician and a separate animal care person. The animal care people have degrees in animal science. They can work with the lab animals when they get sick, and the larger animals if the university has them. UMD has a farm, so the animal care people here work with the cows and I think we have horses too. It's a combination of cleaning and medical care.

Did you go to Comedy school or something Lenore? You are on a ROLL these past few days
To the OP-vet tech, groomer, veterinarian-tho that would be a LOT of school.

Also, if you get a degree in biology, maybe with a concentration in conservation, ecology, or something like that you could see about working at an aquarium or zoo. I'm not sure of the details though. That could be something that you could do as an intern while going to school and then maybe could get a full time job when you finish.

I don't work with animals but I have always wanted to. I thought about becoming a Vet but having worked for a Vet I knew I would never be able to euthanize an animal. I also thought about Vet Tech but they don't make enough money.
I started researching the Pet Therapy Programs. There is not a lot of information our there and most of the programs are not in NY. I would love to be one of those people that brings the dogs to Assisted Living places and Pediatric Hospitals. If you find any information please let me know.

My aunt works in a lab like this, she's a lab tech. She doesn't care for the animals, other people do. But she went to the School of Agriculture at Cornell.
I used to do fundraising for an animal shelter and we were able to volunteer in the shelter on lunch breaks or after work. It was mostly stuff like cleaning cages, walking dogs, playing with the puppies and kittens so they got used to human interaction.

I've used a few people that have started their own businesses doing dog walking/pet sitting.
You can make a lot of $$$$ doing this with the "going" rates some of them charge!
I used a woman once based in Oceanside, and she even figured in a mileage/gas charge!
This lady also did this work so she could continue to be a SAHM because then she could just bring her daughter with her everywhere ;).

Same here.
Grooming, dog walking are all really big now. I took my dog to a groomer who was working out of his apartment. He seriously did a job 1000X better than Petco/Petsmart every has done and charged half the price. He has very loyal clients now so I'm sure he's doing well.

Tommy is making cow sounds, Katie is licking her hair, Anna is holding a crayon to her nose with her lip, Brian is doing the pee pee dance, Maggie is spinning in circles and Joey is laying across 3 desks. *Names have been changed!

I used to work as a Wildlife Rehabilitator. It was mostly avian species (small birds, hawks, owls), opossums, rabbits and chipmunks, and involved rehab of injured animals and raising of orphaned babies. It was at a nature center and some other jobs at the same site were: Animal Care (daily feeding/cleaning cages of resident animals on site) and also Education (going to schools with different wild animals that could not be released and giving demonstrations and/or giving demonstrations at the center)
ETA: Pay was pretty low though!

I looked into giving up my current profession and becoming a vet or vet tech.
Vet tech pay was very low, and vet pay is also pretty low considering all of the schooling (none around LI, BTW) and you probably would need to open your own practice in order to make anything worthwhile.
Unfortunately, reality set in and I decided that in order to live on LI I couldn't take the paycut and/or time without pay to go for schooling.
I volunteer at animal shelter instead, that gives me some satisfaction.
