If your child gets EI services...

do you mind sharing, for what? How often (how many days and hours a week)? Which agency you use? How old were they when they started services and how quickly did you see improvement?

Re: If your child gets EI services...

For Speech...he has a psych eval as well....but that came back normal and no need for an O/T eval, although he was borderline showing sensory intergration issues which we get parent training ( through EI) for and those issues have lessen tremendously!

We get Speech two times a week for an hour each time and Parent training once a week for an hour.

We started in Feb....He started making speech improvements in May....We have NO clue if it was EI or him "catching up" but he is still showing very behind.

We use Marian K Soloman Agency.

Do all kids that qualify for EI get a psych evaluation? I am assuming the psych evaluation looks for sensory issues, autism, ADD, etc.

Re: If your child gets EI services...

Jack receives speech only two days a week.

He has been receiving services since Feb. and I have seen a huge jump in his vocabulary. He only had one word when he started and now he has between 10-15 and a ton of different sounds!

ETA: We use the Marion K Soloman agency

No, the service coordinator asked us which we felt we needed, assesed his needs.

We felt he had a lot of "quirks"... like lack of pain response, very strange eating habits, hard time eating, attending issues, things like that. She ruled out Autism very quickly and then assessed him for any "Delays" ..

I did ask her if she suspected autism or on the spectrum and she said his testing did not indicate that. But she didnt go any further. I guess I will question her when she comes Tuesday.

If your gut tells you to get a psych eval than tell your service coordinator you strongly request one as a supplemental eval. The SC is NOT qualified to diagnose you dc. Let a professional come in and do it even if you want to just rule things out for peace of mind. Cite specific behaviors/concerns to her as your reasoning for your request.

To answer your original question, we took an aggressive approach with my son and he gets a series of services. You can FM me for details. They have worked wonders with him. He began EI without even saying mommy and now has too many words to count, knows the alphabet, can count in Armenian to 10 and English to 100, formulates 4, 5, and 6 word requests, and follows directions. He was doing NONE of this before they came in. We made the EI call at 22 months, they began this approach at 23 months and he is now 33 months. GLChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: If your child gets EI services...

AJ gets speech 2x a week for 45 min, he also gets OT 2x a week for 45 min, and since he is on the spectrum he gets 15 hours a week of ABA. before ABA he got SpEd 2x a week for 45 min.

FM me if you want to know more.

edit: he also gets an additional speech 1x a week at Hofstra

My thoughts exactly. I have worked with many SC's and I think they are good at service coordination. Not diagnosing. some have been pretty clueless. I would want peace of mind for myself, just to rule everything out and know your services (and evals) are the right ones. You can FM me anytime you want!!!!

I am not really concerned about autism. It is something I would like to rule out amongst other things to make sure he is getting the correct treatment though.

Re: If your child gets EI services...

I'm trying to remember - I think they automatically sent someone for a pysch avail. She ruled out anything besides a speech delay within minutes of being here. I'm pretty sure it was a psych eval. I will have to go back and look at my notes.

Re: If your child gets EI services...

DS gets PT 2x a week and speech/feeding 2x a week. We were originally referred for the speech/feeding, but once I met with the service coordinator, she recommended a PT evaluation and he qualified.

He was recommended at 15 months, but was about 18 months when he started services. I saw improvement immediately with PT. The therapist we use for that is from Little Village school, who also did the evaluations. Speech and feeding are going a little slower, but after 7 sessions, he has learned to sign for a few things and just started making a few consonant sounds he hadn't been doing before. The therapist we use for that is from No. Shore Center for Speech, Language and swallowing.

DD gets speech twice a week for 30
OT twice a week (just increased to 3) for sensory integration and special instruction 1 hour a week- basically to help with her behavior.

We started EI right when she (re)started daycare. The improvement was phenomenal. She still has a way to go, but neither her teachers nor her friends parents realize she has any speech delay or sensory issues.
