If your child has ADD

At what point did it interfere in school? Or does it not?
My DS has been diagnosed with ADD inattentive type. Fortunately, he is doing exceptionally well academically. He does need to be redirected or sometimes sit by himself to get independent work done.
I had wanted to get a 504 in place so he would have extra testing time next year as he gets into the ELA stage. But after talking with his teacher and the school psychologist, they see no need. But the psychologist said she will make sure his next year teacher knows the situation and will make sure to keep an eye on his progress.
Obviously, I'm very proud of DS and how we'll he's doing. But I'm just nervous if there comes a point where his ADD becomes a classroom hindrance.
So I'm just curious if any of your kids did well in the classroom and then started to struggle. And if so, at what grade did things get tougher?

For us it was third grade. Ds was able to keep up and actually do well in first and second. Then in third is when we had to intervene and I requested the 504 plan, which took two years to finally get them to agree to. Now in fifth grade, I'm really seeing him struggle in a few areas.

Every child is different. Just keep the lines of communication open with his teachers and keep a careful watch. Extra testing time is not always the answer for ADD kids, sometimes is just seperate location to minimize distractions.

Since Kindergarten with my SS. He was diagnosed with ADHD and Behavioral Issues, so maybe that's why school was an issue with him. He was diagnosed very late because his parents were in denial.

I think as long as you keep the communication open, you will be fine. If you see him struggling with a subject or hard to focus then you can work on getting him the extra time needed for exams and work.

My SS used it from 6th - 8th grade. In HS he doesnt need it anymore.

Two years?!? That's crazy! I'm hoping if we all see him struggling at any point that it won't take two years to get him the accommodations he needs.

Yes, two years. It seems that they will not give a 504 plan to a child unless he/she is failing. At the time I started the process, he was not. He was struggling, but not failing. So, after they denied him, I requested complete IEP testing for learning disabilities. That took some time, and the school year ended and we had to resume the followng year.

Long story short, by the time the testing was complete and they said he did not have a LD, he was failing math. Now that he was failing, I was told, they could put the 504 plan in place. So frustrating!
