If your child was tested for allergies...
Did they have a blood Test or the scratch test? Is one more accurate? If they had the scratch test, was it done on their back? My granddaughter is going to an allergist and I was just wondering. Thanks.

If your child was tested for allergies...
My daughter has had both when she was younger. When she had the scratch test done she was about 5/6 years old so they gave me the option of arms or back.

Re: If your child was tested for allergies...
My DS is 2 and had the scratch test done on his back. I would imagine that the blood test would be more accurate, but the scratch test gave us the results we needed. He has a peanut allergy and was prescribed an Epi Pen right after the test.

Re: If your child was tested for allergies...
My DS (who is almost 19 months) had the skin test (on his back). I'm honestly not sure which is more accurate.
Turns out he has an egg and peanut allergy.

If your child was tested for allergies...
My son is 3 and has had both. He had mild anaphylactic reactions to both dair & egg right before he was 1 yr. old, so the allergist added the blood test to the traditional 1 year blood workup. At 2 the allergist did the blood test again, saw an improvement & did a scratch test on his back (we also did food challenges at 2). At 3 we just did scratch tests (still on his back).

Re: If your child was tested for allergies...
Initially it was a blood test and then when certain things came back positive, the doc did a scratch test.

Both. First was blood, then scratch. They have repeated them and if the numbers come down enough or they come back negative, we can be cleared for a food challenge.
NEITHER is considered "more accurate" they use the tests in different ways to gauge responses and see how the body is reacting. The only truly accurate way to test for a food allergy reaction is to actually ingest it. You can test negative for something and be allergic to it, and vice versa. There are more proteins in a substance than they are able to test for that can cause allergy.

Re: If your child was tested for allergies...
Well scratch test is more accurate per 2 different allergists. If your child has had hives in the past 30 days they don't want to do scratch tests bcyou can be more sensitive and have false positives. Blood work can give false negatives. I know my DD tested positive for some things via blood work (we needed quicker results) but came up positive for other things in the scratch test. My girls were tested on their arms and their allergist limits the number they test. I have other parents say they child were tested for more at once but on their back.

Re: If your child was tested for allergies...
Ds had blood test first, then scratch test on back. He was two years old. Turned out that the blood test was NOT accurate. It showed no allergy to shellfish when in fact he is highly allergic! ETA: when I noticed a possible reaction to shellfish and eggs I mentioned it to my ped. She told us to do the bloodwork, which came back neg for shellfish allergy. But I KNEw he was allergic - just mommy instinct. So I took him to allergist. The allergist said the blood tests can be inaccurate but sometimes peds don't know that. HTH.

Both blood and scratch can give false results per both mine and DD's allergists (2 of hers, plus mine through my life). I am a perfect example of this. I test negative on the RAST and scratch to shellfish, but I am anaphylactic. I test positive to eggs on RAST and scratch, but am not allergic to them. They use the tests to get an idea and then monitor over the years to use the results to come to a decision on whether or not to go forward with food challenges etc. Avoidance is not usually an issue, so if there is a suspected allergy, they usually will say there is likely an allergy and avoid the food. But if someone is eating a food with no issues regularly, then they usually allow them to continue eating it. It's pretty much a statistics game.
But physical results (hives, anaphylaxis, etc) from actually ingesting the food is the only true accurate result.
