If your DC is left handed--
Do they use scissors with their left or right hand? I am teaching my DS to use scissors and he wants to use his left. But my SIL who is left handed and a teacher said I should teach him with his right.

Re: If your DC is left handed--
I'm lefty and use my right, my DD is left and uses her left. If your child picks up the scissor with left continue on.

Re: If your DC is left handed--
I am a lefty and was encouraged to only use my right hand... I was failing kindegarten until my mom thought to ask if they were letting me use my left hand to write and cut! The teacher's answer was, "Well we would prefer all the children use the same hand." And I am only 27... this wasn't a long time ago! Sometimes I don't know what century these teachers are coming from when it comes to lefties!
Let your child use whatever hand they feel comfortable with. They will have enough battles to fight in this world over being a lefty (school desks, spiral notebooks, and can openers, just to name a few) that you don't need to add to it by making her use a hand she doesn't feel comfortable with for cutting.

Left hand for EVERYTHING. I have never heard of forcing a child to use their less dominate hand.

Re: If your DC is left handed--
Thanks everyone! He totally gets using scissors with his left and I am going with it--I guess I was just confused bc my SIL so strongly recommended teaching him to use his right.

Re: If your DC is left handed--
DH is a lefty, but does everything else righty (golf, batting, kicking, etc)
on a side note: my grandmother was forced to write righty (in 1910's), but when she had her stroke, she was able to switch to her left hand with little problem.

i agree! i am a lefty and a teacher too and i've never heard of encouraging a child to use her less dominant hand for anything unless she chooses to.

Re: If your DC is left handed--
My son is left handed and I would never dream of making him use scissors with his right hand. Imagine if someone made us, righthanded people, use scissors with our left hand. How would that feel? Not too great, I bet!
Actually, this reminds me of something: I grew up in Eastern Europe and it was customary to "teach" left handed kids to use their right hand as dominant... . There was one girl in my class who was born a lefty and was forced to use her right hand for writing. She did, but that was the only thing she did with her right hand. Everything else, eating, playing sport, etc. etc. etc. she still did with her left. Bascially, it was percieved as if something was wrong with people who are left handed. Pretty sad, if you ask me!
I tell you the real problem with being a "rightly" and having a left handed child: teaching them how to read, right, cut etc is rather uncomfortable because your view is basically always blocked... but I am sure you know that already!

Re: If your DC is left handed--
I'm an OT and would absolutely advise you to teach a left-handed child to use scissors with their left hand and hold the paper with their right hand. Use Fiskar brand sicssors.
