Fever, redness, VERY strong smelling urine, and a teeny bit of blood in the diaper.

Not sure how old your dd is but for younger (toddler and infants) here are a few things to look for.
Loss of apetite.
No soaking wet diapers during the day - They will 'void' at night because it's less painful to urinate during sleep.
Foul smell.
Sometimes a fever - My dd doesn't always run a fever with UTI's.
Complains of back pain.
Lethargic.
The only way to know for sure is to test and culture the urine.

Pretty much what the above posters said. DD got one the week before she turned 1, so we didn't hear any "complaints" b/c she couldn't vocalize them.
Woke up in the middle of the night with a ridiculous fever (105) and a VERY strong smelling odor in her diaper-- think 10 overnight diapers festering in a sauna, that kind of smell (gross, I know, but it was rancid)
Our ped said that any fever that high is likely not teething.

With DD, they first did the urine collection bag...attached it right over her area after a thorough cleaning and waited for her to urinate into it. Then, while in the ped's office, they did a quick test of the urine and it came back with red flags-- could have been contaminants from her skin, etc., but with the fever and all, they figured a UTI was likely. So then she had a catheter done right in the office (I was freaked, but it was so quick and DD was fine)...that confirmed the UTI the next day. She was given a strong antibiotic and was feeling better within a few days (although not back to her playful self for about a week).
