We discussed this even before we got married.
He has 5 and I have none (and it will probably stay that way).
I have a lot of additional responsibility taking care of my disabled dad, his finances and overseeing his property, because of that DH takes care of all of the gifts, birthday cards, etc. for his family.

neither us of have neices and nephews yet, he has two brothers and I am an only child... I do 95% of the shopping for the relatives/his or mine- so when we have neices/nephews I am sure I will do the shopping for them

We both have nieces and nephews, and I buy all gifts. When any kid opens a gift from us, its just as much a surprise to DH as it is to the kid!

DH has the nieces and nephew - and godkids - but I buy the gifts for them. Sometimes he will help pick the toys for his nephew but otherwise I have to brainstorm and shop.

I do.
But, since we got married, my SIL has had her daughters calling me Aunt Sandra anyway, so I consider them my nieces too. 
we are the same way...my sister has three kids and they have always called Dh uncle XXXXX..
( My niece has always called him uncle since my sister was pregnant when Dh and I started dating) and I call his brother , which is my BIL, daughter my niece

I am the one that handles almost all the shopping for DH's relatives. He will give me ideas for his parents & brother, but when it comes to nephews, it is all me. I don't mind it though!

Between us we have 9 nieces and nephews (7 are on DHs side) and we both do the shopping for them. DH loves to shop for them - we both enjoy it.

to answer my own question:
do i think i should have the burden of buying them presents all the time? no. i dont think a woman's job should be to buy the man's family presents. i will do it sometimes if i see something in the store that i know they will like, but i leave the present buying to dh.
on occation ill do the gift buying in exchange for a favor he does for me.

I agree with you that it shouldn't be the woman's burden but unfortunately it has become so for me. Usually I don't mind and its kind of fun, but as the numbers grow it is another thing to do. DH will help out but then he waits till the last minute, which makes me anxious, or just doesn't but good, age appropriate gifts.

It depends on which niece or nephew it is for and who has time. Sometimes if it's a video game DH will get it or if it is books, I will.
