I never quit out of impulse but I prepare my exit right away and leave when I have my plan B ready.

Re: If your job really wronged you...
I was kind of in this situation not long ago and I gave my notice-just to have my boss turn around and tell me not to come back. Would I have liked those 2 weeks-of course-but in the grand scheme of things Im glad he let me go. I got my head back together and took time...ALOT of time and found something else.
I think it depends on how much more of the situation you are in you can take-for me I couldnt take anymore-he had me crying and truly screwed up my whole idea of "work ethic"
Good Luck with which ever you choose

ETA: I have been about to walk out a couple of times already. I resisted the temptation. I have my plan B. They are getting their notice soon.

Well my jon is not on my a-list either
I realized that after I posted.
I would have to give a lot of notice anyway.

Never jump overboard without a lifejacket, you never know what is going to happen in life. You could say screw it, quit and your better half be laid off the next day....... Your looking for anything after that and that old crap job looks like a dream.

You see I don't give them notice without anything else lined up. You have to be ready that the minute you give notice, they let you go at that very moment. They will ask you to give them notice but they won't return the favor. So, I give notice (always have!) out of courtesy and professionalism, not because they expect it.

Same here.
I'm currently on the hunt for a new job but rest assured, when I get one, they will not be getting much notice.
I will give some notice, b/c I'm not one to completely burn bridges but I will not be doing much to "prepare" the next person to fill my shoes.

Re: If your job really wronged you...
THis happened to me a few years ago (before my current job) and DH and I were engaged at the time and he was working so I was able to quit before having something lined up. I was unemployed for about 2 months afterwards.
I actually was so angry about everything that went down in that office, that I went into my boss' office and told him I was resigning and that I would give him through the day, but that was it. For my mental health I had to leave there. He proceeded to berate me and tell me how unprofessional I was being and then called the entire office in to talk about me. So i got up and left. (I had already deleted all my emails and files before going into his office).
He was a horrible, horrible person and I still cannot believe that I was able to stay there for 6 months.

Re: If your job really wronged you...
in all my jears of working, i only walked out once...actually i worked out the day and emailed my resignation to my boss and HR. I had been looking for over six months while I was still there. After I quit I found a job within a month. i found it was much easier to find a job when i didnt have one.

Re: If your job really wronged you...
i would wait until i have something else but get everything put together (ie - forward yourself any emails you want, etc.) asap, just in case.
i was having some big probs w/my last boss and had been looking for a new job. i had been working on a letter to her boss and the VP of HR (they're both in seattle so they never saw her on a day to day basis) so they would know what's going on. It was a really bad situation that needed to be addressed. Well she ended up f-ing me over - convinced others that my job (for which she begged to have created for more than a year) wasn't necessary and I was let go. The entire office knew it was personal - one guy even tried to have HER fired after that. Point is, I had that letter ready so I was able to email it asap. I have no idea if anything ever came of it, but at least I know that it was sent so fast after the news was delivered that there is no way they could think that it was just an angry ex-employee just trying to make trouble (and they knew there were probs to begin with, just not to the level they were.)

Re: If your job really wronged you...
Been there last year....basically the first week there I knew I made a huge mistake. It was so dysfunctional there and I knew I could do better. Basically I stuck it out (no choice needed the $) and looked for a job ALL day LOL online..I swear...that is so unlike me but I hated it so much I didn't care. Like someone above said - I did the bare minimum. I squeezed in interviews at 7 or 8 am....lunchtime...after work, went to job fairs..anything it took. That job made me sick to the point of being 100% miserable and depressed every day. It took me a good 6 months to find my job that I have now and I am very happy.

Re: If your job really wronged you...
Def. think things through and come up with plan B. I hate my job and the way they do things..I"m ITCHING to get out and I've been tempted many of times to say I DON"T NEED THIS and walk out. But unfortunately I need the money, but I'm constantly searching. Its not good to hold it in, but It'll feel great when I walk in there and give my 2 weeks..I think they will fall off their chairs!

Re: If your job really wronged you...
This happened to me in November. I waited till the end of the day and packed up all my stuff. I went in the next day but my co-worker really thought I had quit. She knew I was mad and she told me it's easier to find a job when you have one then to find one when you dont. So I toughed it out and was very much actively looking but it was very hard. We hit the end of the year where a lot of companies were doing hiring freezes and others were laying people off. So I just tough it out. I am still pizzed but i dont do more then what is expected of me. I dont go out of my way for anyone, i don't train anyone, and i just basically go in with the attitude of it's a job and it pays my bills. At 5:30 screw them I am going home. It's definately tough but I just bite my lip and do what I have to do. no more no less.
Then come September I go out on maternity leave for 12 weeks and then after that I am walking in, handing in my fob key and saying F U
