If your NB has mouthy movements, does that mean he is hungry? I feel like a human pacifier!
2 week old DS is constantly making those mouthy movements. DH keeps thinking DS is hungry. I can't help but feel like a human pacifier. Sometimes DS will have a feeding and then half an hour later, he will make those mouthy movements again.

DS does (2 weeks old). Usually they mean he is hungry, but sometimes I can just give him a paci for a little while and he is fine. I find that if he is trying to eat his hand, I'll feed him. If he is just making some mouth movements, especially if he just ate for a while or if he is mostly asleep, I give him the paci. If he is hungry, the paci won't work more than a few minutes anyway. I didn't really want to give him a paci at all, but the lactation consultant in the hospital said that it looked like he was using me as a pacifier, and recommended that we start using one.

DD is only a week old and started this in the hospital. The LC's would tell me it is cluster feeding but I knew it wasn't and so did the nurses. If it has been an hour and nursed for 15+ minutes then I will give the paci. Usually she starts to fuss because she is either wet or dirty. I bought the Tommie tippie ones but the silicone is harder and it is a little longer. I then got the Nuks and that works great!

Sometimes DS will do those mouth movements after he cries after a wet diaper (often right after a feeding). I don't think he is hungry though.

we totally went through this too. . dh would think he was hungry but i think that he just does those movements sometime. .
he does always make those rooting movements when he is hungry but I don't think he's always hungry when he makes those movements (doesn't this seem like one of those awful math logic problems?)
I agree that if he keeps doing them and won't take anything else he could be hungry again but I DEF don't want to get in the habit of doing the human pacifier thing bc then you can end up doing it ALL the time. . .

nursing is what they know and what comforts them...I think it is more instinct and looking for comfort than always hunger...I would offer binkie, toy/teether, pick him up, rock him all first if it was under the 2 hr mark from last feed...and offer the breast if at the 2+ hr mark!
