If your venue provides the cake, but you found one elsewhere that is awesome....
And you think you could get it for a decent price - would you get the cake and tell the venue to forget it?

same - maybe they can offer ice cream or an alternate dessert...
make sure they won't charge you a 'plating' fee per slice of cake though!

absolutely. I did it for my wedding. I got a dessert "upgrade" in lieu of the cake.

When I did that for their christening they venue gave me a credit for the amount they would pay for a sheet cake (I think it was $40)

When I did that the venue gave me ice cream to go with the cake. They cut the cake free of charge and served it with the ice cream.

We're doing that at White Post....they're giving me four extra pitchers of beverages for the adults in lieu of the cake.

awesome - that's where we are having it. Although that doesn't seem like a fair exchange since soda is pennies, but whatever!!

Be careful though - some places will charge you a "cake cutting fee" because you'd be using their dishes, utensils, etc. My reception hall tried doing this to me

For DD's birthday I had 2 cakes - the awesome one I had made and the Carvel cake the place provided. So yes I definitely would.

For DD's christening I got the name of the bakery they used and gave them the pic of the cake I wanted and they charged me the difference. It was $$$ though!

We did this at both DSs parties. DS #1 the hall actually substituted a sundae bar for the kids (about 20 kids were there of 100 guests). For DS #2, the hall gave us an ice cream dish to serve with the cake for all guests.

Yes...def. That's what I did for Rylans Christening. The restaurant provided brownie sundaes instead.
