If you've been to Yellowstone...
What airport did you fly into? What time of year did you go? How long did you stay and where?
Thanks!

Re: If you've been to Yellowstone...
We drove as part of a cross country trip in July (over 20 years ago). The main lodge was full so we stayed on site at another lodge (it was not as grand but it was perfectly fine). We ate at the main lodge and it was really from a different era. Very beautiful and majestic.

Re: If you've been to Yellowstone...
Went in the summer - flew into Missoula, rented a car. I've been many times - this past trip was the first in a lodge - Lake Yellowstone Lodge (very lovely). (Only did camping the times before that). I missed the camping - didn't feel as connected to the wilderness as when we camped. (Although part of that had to do with us not picnicking either - we ate at the "Villages" in Yellowstone, which were packed with noise & people.)
I definitely recommend taking some of the naturalist-led interpretive hikes & if you are traveling with kids, have them do the junior ranger program.

We flew into Denver...we did it as a longer trip through the Badlands, then over to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and then on to Cody and back to Denver. We went in July and camped throughout. It was amazing!

Re: If you've been to Yellowstone...
We haven't been there since 2005, but I can't wait to go back with our kids.
We flew into Jackson Hole and stayed at the Snake River Lodge in Teton Village.
We were there at the end of August/Early September and it was perfect! The weather was outstanding and there were no crowds because everybody was back-to school.

If you've been to Yellowstone...
I was a kid and we were staying in the San Francisco area so we went from there. It was either July or August and HOT. Like 100 degrees hot. Us kids were miserable and bored. LOL

Funny, I was looking into flying into Jackson Hole and staying at Snake River. But then the idea of flying into Billings or Helena and taking the time to drive to Yellowstone seemed appealing too.

Re: If you've been to Yellowstone...
I went at the end of June three years ago.
Flew into Salt Lake City, UT and drove - Utah-Idaho-Montanna-Wyoming.
There was SNOW on the ground!!! The weather was in the low 40's.......it was freezing.
People were shoveling out the campsites.
We styled in Yellowtone in cabins.
I think this was freak weather or that time of year.

My DH and I said we would fly into Billings the next time we visited for a different "view" and so we can spend more time in the north side of the park, like stay in Mammoth Hot Springs, etc.. We spent over a week in WY, so we did a lot of driving and sightseeing throughout WY and Idaho.
I'm so jealous you're booking a trip to WY...and that whole area of the country in general. Wyoming has to be one of my favorite locations that we've been to. It was so breathtaking, especially since there weren't a lot of people there.

I want to do a lot of driving around outside of the park too - just in pictures the scenery seems like a dream. I'm being overly ambitious and would like to go up to Glacier Park, too.
And you've reminded me that the park is huge and I should probably prioritize what I want to see and maybe find accommodations based on that. Or does it not really matter?
Thank you all for responding. I think I'm going to avoid summer and go in October (sadly this is for 2014 and I want to go right now )

Re: If you've been to Yellowstone...
We went to Yellowstone in September 2014. Unbeknownst to me, I was pregnant with #2 at the time. We traveled with family who lived in WY, including my 2.5 DD.
We flew Southwest to Denver from LI. We rented a minivan and drove from Laramie, WY to Jackson, WY. We stayed at the Jackson Hole Lodge (Jackson Hole Lodge) They had a family suite with a full kitchen w/dining area, 2.5 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, living room and balcony. It was in central Jackson, easy to walk around town and accessible to the major roads to the parks.
From here, we went to West Yellowstone and stayed at the Holiday Inn. This is a smallish town - could count the number of blocks before you hit sparse, open land.
From here, we went to Cody, WY where we stayed at a Best Western or Comfort Inn type place.
We had wanted to stay in the park at their lodges, but when we booked the trip in March 2014, everything was already fully booked.
One note to those looking in the fall - we went at the beginning of September after Labor Day. There were signs everywhere in the park that the south, east and west entrances would be closing in a month, so if you plan a trip there, keep in mind that the north entrance in Gardiner is the only one that is open year round.
