If you've converted to gas recently
We live in the town of north hemp. We just converted & the inspector just spoke to our plumbers instead of DH. Our new equipment is in the unfinished part of our basement. The inspector told them we have to install fire proof sheet rock directly above the equipment. Like just above the equipment, we don't have to add it to the entire room. Dumb, right? Because flames will travel.
He also told them that we need a fresh air vent in that room and suggested to use the hole that was now exposed when they removed our oil tank. That room is freezing now because there is literally a hole in the side of my house for fresh air to come in & it's not even winter. Our plumber said he never heard of venting like this. He said people usually install a vent in their door closing off the room?
Are these new codes? Did you guys have to do this? I'm going to see if I can add pics for better explanation.

If you've converted to gas recently
Only 1 out of 3 quotes included a fireboard and that was the company we went with. It's about 3' x 3' above the equipment.
You 100% want the hole covered up. Creatures can come in and even worse you might get an oil delivery. Our basement is unfinished and we don't have any fresh air vents.

If you've converted to gas recently
I would leave the hole and say nothing. Once you pass inspection close it up. They won't follow up. I find the less you say the better.
When anything is inspected by us either myself or my husband is always with the inspector.

I have a fresh air intake in my utility closet that goes to the outside. I have never had an issue with it being too cold or anything getting in.
As for the fire proofing yes you need to do it. Flames will eventually spread yes but you are looking to deli that by rating the area right above it.
You can't go by what people have unless it is very new as codes change all the time!

Exactly but make sure you do put the vents on the door as well.
