I'm a 30(ish) year old Hair Dye virgin

I have never in my life colored my hair but I think I'll need to start soon. The grey hairs are starting to grow & I feel like my natural color is too dark for my skin tone anyway.

I need help & enlightenment! How long does color last? How do I maintain the color (shampoos, products)? Will my hair start to dry out? because not to toot my own horn but I have some really nice hair with no split ends at all -lol

I wouldn't even know what to ask for when making an appt. I know there are highlights, lowlights, I don't know what else? Please help me figure out what to get?

I'd speak to the colorist at your local salon. It took a few tries to get the exact shade that I wanted, but I've been dyeing my hair the same color for years now. My hair is in very good condition, too, no split ends, very soft and shiny. And that is after coloring my hair for over a decade (my DH has never even SEEN my natural hair color ). There's plenty of shampoos that help to maintain color treated hair. I dye my hair red so my colorist recommends John Frieda's radiant red. I used that for awhile, but I like to switch up my shampoo every few months. Right now I'm all about L'Oreal's EverPure Shampoo. But really, anything sulfate free is better for colored hair. I usually go every 3 months to get my hair colored. I could go and get my roots touched up after a month and a half, but that gets pricey. I do all over color, but again, I'd ask your colorist what type of color (highlights, lowlights, etc.) they recommend for you. Just make sure you go to someone who knows what they are talking about! I do not live in li but just wanted to give some tips from my experience...

If your blonde i would say highlight. you dont have to go the second you see roots. If you do a single process (dye all your hair 1 color) I find its nore upkeep.

If your brunette you can also do highlights but depending on how light you go it can be a lot of maintenence. But if you do a nice honey color that can be lower maintence.

Maybe ask about a glaze? Im noy sure how that works but I hear some women at work do that to cover grey.

It can last as long as well as you maintain it. Use shampoos for color treated hair it will help to extend the color. I started using loreal color vibrancy shampoo and conditioner and its been 6 months since i did my highlights and they are stillthe same color and havent turned brassy.

I deep condition my hair once a week. And i use a heat protector in my hair before blow drying. Yes it may dry your hair some but again its about how you care for it.

The most important thing is finding an amazing colorist. Thats the hardest part. Itsso hard to find someone who really knows what their doing. And you have to be willing to spend a lil money on an experienced person.

Coloring can be so much fun!

I do not dye my hair but every couple of months I do a glaze with a red tint to cover the couple of grays that have appeared. I have darkest brown hair and love it and don't really want to dye it yet so this is working for now..

I would get a rec of a good colorist and speak to them of your concerns.

FWIW, I started doing mine on my own because I just don't have the time and money to do the upkeep.

I always keep it close to my natural color though and would never doing anything extreme. I also stopped highlights too.

If this is a concern, speak to the colorist about doing something that would be easy to manage on your own.

I do permanent color on my hair, only because I am about 50% grey. (thanks mom !)
My colorist tries to keep the color close to my natural reddish brown. My roots get touched up every 6 to 8 weeks, color pulled thru to the ends every other time.

I don't have dry hair or split ends, I wash it twice a week with Pantene and condition it.
I probably should use a shampoo for color treated hair.

Going lighter for me would be too much maintenance.
If my grey were silver, I would let it grow in, but the darn hairs are white.

Talk with a colorist or two, see what they recommend.
