I'm confused...updated with questions on bottom
If they only inject sperm into the egg for ICSI, what do they do for regular IVF?

Re: I'm confused...
they put the sperm sample and egg in a petri dish and let the sperm fertilize the egg the way it would normally.

Re: I'm confused...
Why would they NOT do ICSI then all the time? I wonder if they did that for me??? I am going to ask today.
Like... Why not just make that the standard if it is better fert results... Is it harmful to the eggs?

Insurance usually won't cover it unless it's medically necessary.

and I believe there is a different school of thought with doctors.
Also, if you are over 35 they may want to do assisted hatching. It is performed in order to help an embryo hatch out of its protective layering and implant into the uterus. I had both done.

Re: I'm confused...
Since I have unexplained IF, I had it done on half of my eggs and the others were left to fertilize on their own. The half with ICSI had a 100% fertilization rate and and the others were only 40%. The RE will usually choose wether or not to do it based upon your diagnosis.

Re: I'm confused...
DH doesn't have any sperm problems as of now- when he did the sperm washing it was good and he had a semen analysis done last year that they said was normal. He has to get another SA done before we do IVF. I believe our biggest problem is my PCOS.
I was able to get pregnant once on my own (m/c), but my injectible/IUI cycle failed, which surprised me.
My insurance doesn't cover IVF anyway. Should I ask about ICSI? How much might it be?
If they DON'T do assisted hatching, do they just shoot the fertilized eggs back into your uterus?
I thought all of these things were done with regular IVF. Now I feel like there is a slim chance it will work...
