I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

My nephew is in 7th grade. He recently told my sister that his history teacher uses profanity in the classroom. He said that this teacher has called kids a$$holes, jacka$$, a$$, etc. I'm not sure if he says more and my nephew is just afraid to tell my sister. We think this is completely inappropriate. My sister's friend doesn't think it is that big of a deal, and says that we are just behind the times. I just feel that using those words, especially towards adolescents, first of all sends them a message that it is ok to talk like that toward others and that it is ok to go out in the hall and call other kids the same kinds of things. In addition, I think using profanity gives the impression of a person who is not "educated" and "professional". I don't even know if I'm describing how I feel properly, I'm just so angered by this that I had to come right on here to ask opinions of others.

This teacher also takes his "favorite" students on field trips, and makes no secret of it. Last week he made an announcement in class that there was going to be a field trip this Friday (today). My nephew raised his hand and asked when they were going to get the permission slips. The teacher said only his favorite students were getting a permission slip b/c he was only taking his favorites. And then he proceeded to go around the room and hand out the papers to a select few students. It is not even like he made the comment, in a joking manner and then gave the papers to everybody. He deliberately selected students in the class to take on the trip and made sure all the others saw it.

My sister's friend (who thinks there is nothing wrong with this man's behavior) has a daughter who IS one of the "favorites" and got to go on the trip. She made a point of telling my sister that she made sure to get her girls in on his good side and to be sure they were in his little group of students b/c she knows that he "takes care of his students" -- but apparently only his favorites.

I'm so outraged by this man that I can not even describe it. I want my sister to march into the Superintendent's office and make a formal complaint. But my nephew is afraid that he will become even more of a target at school (he is already being bullied almost daily by a few kids).

What do you think?
What would you do?

Oh and not that it really matters, but this is an excellent school district.

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

I would raise hell!

1/ use of profanity
2/ use of profanity to belittle children
3/ openly advertise favorites which create a terrible environment in the classroom
4/ Do the favorites have special grades too?
5/ I would question the "relationship" with his "favorites".

VERY shady all the way! VERY disturbing!

As the mother of a 7th grader, I too would go to the superintendant. Just curious, is this a tenured teacher??

Me too. Although what this teacher is doing is highly inappropriate, you do not want to make your nephew's situation worse.

Does your sister have contact with the parents of any other students who have this teacher? (besides the friend whose kid is a "favorite") Does your nephew have friends who also have this teacher who can also document the behavior?
I would try to bring it up as a group of concerned parents rather than an individual, if possible for your nephew's sake. However if it is not possible then I would tell your sister to go to the superintendent and ask for her name not to be used. Hopefully this will avoid any association with your nephew.

I completely agree, especially #5. I would also see if your sister could get in touch with some other parents as well so they could complain as a unit and not make your poor nephew a target. Although if the superintendent and principal handle it the correct way, there should be no way of knowing who ratted the poor excuse for an adult out.

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

Umm I cant even believe that I just read that.

I cant even BEGIN to even imagine how that is allowed to go on.

How have other parents not complained about this before?!!?!?

I am a teacher and have taught in 4 different schools in the last 8 years. I have NEVER EVER come across a teacher that did any of those things.

"special field trips".... ew. My skin just crawled even thinking about that. It sounds like something that would be on an episode of law & order or criminal minds. ICK.

I dont understand how administration allows this behavior.

I would absolutely march my behind right up to the school, demand meetings with the principal and then take it higher.

Tell her to document this behavior and maybe get some other parents to back her up.

I would say something

I worked with someone before when I was teaching high school who was like this and I was so happy when a parent finally complained because only THEN did the admin take it more seriously and action was then taken

DEFINITELY say something!

I'd be handing my son a cell phone with a voice recorder & be on the phone with the superintendent & principal the minute he walked in the door with it.

Not becauseI wouldn't believe my nephew but because I believe in bringing as much proof with me into the meeting.Document, document, document.

Dates, times, incidents, students singled out, students taken on special field trips.

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

As an educator and future administrator, this behavior is totally unacceptable! I would tell my nephew's mother and encourage her to complain to the sup/principal.

And, if I may, just because it is in a good school district, doesn't mean every teacher is good!

I am a seventh grade teacher and this would never happen in my classroom, let alone my school. That is totally unacceptable. I cant believe parents havent made complaints yet. If I was a parent I would ask for a meeting with the AP and/or principal

Honestly when reading this and read the part that he has "FAVORITE" students and your sisters friend has "a daughter", I hate to say it, but, right away a red flag went up!

I'd address the bullying, I'd address the behavior of the teacher AND I'd DEMAND my child be removed from this class! No WAY would I put up with this!
Go straight to the superintendent!

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

I teach middle school, and if any teacher in my school behaved like this, many parents would be up in arms and there would be hell to pay. You are in a rough situation because your sister doesn't seem to care, but I really believe that if enough parents complained, something would be done.

ITA with this. I would first document by writing down all incidents your nephew remembers of inappropriate behavior- the dates and specifics of any name calling, use of profanity and taking of only certain students on the fieldtrip. He could also bring some kind of recorder into class. That way, it is more concrete and specific about the behaviors of the teacher, not just your nephew's feelings about him. I think the teacher is going to try to deny it. Also, maybe try to talk to some other students in the class about it. Then, I would go to the principal with the evidence. If you are not happy with the outcome, I'd go to the superintendent and at the very least, demand a class change.

I had a teacher who used to say" your and azz" and things like that. Honestly, he was one of the most liked and well respected teachers at the school.

i agree. i've never heard of such nonsense. if that is all true, that teacher has to be reprimanded and let go.

i don't know that audio taping is legal if it's hidden. there may be rules/laws associated with it. i would research that before i would ever send a child in to tape anyone.

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

Since this is an excellent school district makes me even more mad that this is going on.

I think she needs to have a meeting with the principal to address the inappropriate behavor of the teacher as well as the bullying . I don't think by confronting the teacher she will get anywhere.

He is such a sweet kid, I feel so bad for him. Chat Icon And knowing how your sister is I can't believe she didn't march up there yet Chat Icon

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher

As a teacher, I think you should know that we appreciate beging talked to first- how would you feel if at your job a customer or client"heard" from another one that you did something inappropriate and went straight to the CEO???

If the parents feel that this is without a doubt true then AT LEAST go to the Principal first- not the superintendent or school board!

It makes parents look bad to think that the first conversation about an issue should be with the head of the school district.

That's terrible! I would request a meeting with the teacher AND his department head first. If nothing changes, then go to the principal and superintendent.
