I teach middle school, and if any teacher in my school behaved like this, many parents would be up in arms and there would be hell to pay. You are in a rough situation because your sister doesn't seem to care, but I really believe that if enough parents complained, something would be done.
You must have misunderstood, my sister is FURIOUS!!!!! But she just found out about alot of this stuff late this week and is trying to gather more info from my nephew and other parents before she decides what to do.

Since this is an excellent school district makes me even more mad that this is going on.
I think she needs to have a meeting with the principal to address the inappropriate behavor of the teacher as well as the bullying . I don't think by confronting the teacher she will get anywhere.
He is such a sweet kid, I feel so bad for him. And knowing how your sister is I can't believe she didn't march up there yet
Believe me Tracy, she wants to. But of course, like all 7th graders Andrew is begging her to wait until he is out of the school!

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher
Thank you everybody for your responses and for reinforcing the idea that this is not acceptable behavior for an educator.
Arieschick and Palebride, I really appreciate your point of view...maybe that is a good way to start, to at least meet with him first ALONG WITH his department head.
A colleague of mine also suggested that I check out ratemyteachers.com to see if he is on there with any feedback from parents or students. Then we can also try to get a sense of whether my nephew is exaggerating anything, not intentionally, but just being from a 7th grader's perspective.

I would address the daily bullying first honestly.
Oh believe me, this is being addressed. My sister did march into the social worker's office the DAY she found out about it. The kids have already gotten in-school-suspension once for it.

I would be just as mad if this was going on in a less than "excellent" school district.....

Had a similar incident when Chel was in grade school. Her teacher was calling the kids names, no profanity, just inappropriate name calling. This teacher had been in the nyc school system for 20 years too. Went straight to the superintendent's office. She retired at the end of the year.
Total BS and I'd be in the superintendent's office Monday morning to discuss this. Forget about going to his principal, I'd go right to the top.
I had an experience with sexual harrassment and my mom had a teacher and his license done with in NYS--he was a 20 year veteran as well. Go to the top once all the information is gathered...

As the mother of a 7th grader, I too would go to the superintendant. Just curious, is this a tenured teacher??
Just going to add, this is why I think tenure should NOT exist.

Tenure does not protect teachers that are doing what this teacher is doing.

ratemyteacher is useless. ANYONE can go on there and post anything they want about anyone they want--you don't have to be a student or parent to do so. it's anonymous as well. i would take anything on that website with a grain of salt IMO.
i can go on there and write 100 glowing reviews about myself and 100 nasty reviews about a colleague if i wanted to and no one would know.

I would raise hell!
1/ use of profanity 2/ use of profanity to belittle children 3/ openly advertise favorites which create a terrible environment in the classroom 4/ Do the favorites have special grades too? 5/ I would question the "relationship" with his "favorites".
VERY shady all the way! VERY disturbing!
ITA! I would be up the principall/superintendint's azz until they addressed this

As a teacher, I think you should know that we appreciate beging talked to first- how would you feel if at your job a customer or client"heard" from another one that you did something inappropriate and went straight to the CEO???
If the parents feel that this is without a doubt true then AT LEAST go to the Principal first- not the superintendent or school board!
It makes parents look bad to think that the first conversation about an issue should be with the head of the school district.
Normally I would agree with you - but at this level of egregious behavior, I wouldn't even consider it. I consider his behavior harassment. I've had to deal with staff members who cannot approach their supervisors over their issues & come to me (HR).
Also regarding recording, I believe NY is a one party consent state (meaning as long as one party agrees to be taped & it is not interference with an electronic signal (telephone), it is not illegal).Still trying to find the penal code but here are additional sources

Wow! Totally inappropriate on so many levels! I would complain asap about it, and not wait to address teh bullying first, as the teacher seems to be making students like your nephew more of a target. I would check to make sure that the story is 100% accurate though, before you jeopardize someone's job. Kids do exaggerate and make things up, you know. I am not saying he did, but you never know. Just check with other students first. Once it is confirmed, raise some noise, bc it is so ridiculous!

Re: I'm enraged - Opinions needed regarding jr. high teacher
I think if this is true it is absolutely egregious and he should be fired.
I would however, go speak to him first and hear his side.
As far as the special field trips go - could it be that instead of his "favorite"students it is the students with the highest GPA or the did the best on a test. I feel like students can misunderstand that kind of thing.
I just would make sure to get all the facts first from all sides. My friend who is a teacher had a student tell his parents that she was throwing balls at the students (like dodgeball style) when in reality it was an excercise where she would toss a ball to them and they would catch it. Fortunately, she had all the other students who were able to back her up.
So I would definately get all sides of the story first.

That's terrible! I would request a meeting with the teacher AND his department head first. If nothing changes, then go to the principal and superintendent.
I agree that these would be the appropriate steps to follow.
